“Another enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 3 November 2012

Our second visit to Corton, we had previously visited a year ago prior to the refurbishment work.
We were on a three night break with another couple and stayed in standard plus accommodation in the 'Boardwalk' . As mention on previous reviews some rooms and landscaping had been upgraded and refurbished since our last visit and it all looked very nice, and hopefully this will be extended to the standard rooms in due course. Having said that the room we had was clean and comfortable and adequate for a weekend break. However the bathroom is in need of upgrading and the water pressure from the shower is pathetic. Although our room was serviced to a reasonable standard our friends room was not, with obvious signs that it had not been done. Neither room was serviced on Sunday.
Enough of the whining the rest of the stay was excellent the staff throughout were friendly and polite, the food was top notch, well cooked and prepared, good choice and always plenty of it. The seating arrangements in the restaurant means you keep your table for the evening entertainment which I can see would not suit all, as some of the table locations do not give you a particularly good view of the stage. We changed our allotted table to one more suited without any trouble. Service was good and efficient with our waitress Hannah being excellent.
The entertainment was good with a comedian, 'Rat Pack' tribute and camp entertainment team. During the day a few quizzes and games were organised if you wished to participate. The site at Gunton Hall, a very short distance away has a large swimming pool which is superior than the small pool at Corton and we visited this on the Sunday as the weather was not good, we had no problem using their facilities which were very good.
Overall and very enjoyable stay at a very good price, so much so we've both booked for a visit next year, and it will be interesting to see what further refurbishment work has been done.

Reviewed 28 October 2012

After a busy year of exotic vacations around the world, we decided to take a last minute short break in one of our favourite parts of the country, the Norfolk Broads.

Corton Coastal Village is well placed just North of Lowestoft, and is within easy reach of Great Yarmouth and the broads villages plus of course Lowestoft. For bigger shopping experiences, Ipswitch is only 44 miles away.

The village sits on a small cliff overlooking a gentle sea view, but unfortunately the poor weather stoped us exploring this fully and I never found out if there was access to the beach below.

We are generally not the type of couple to go on the typical all inclusive Ballroom dancing type SAGA holidays, although in fairness we at least now qualify on age :(. So we sort of expected a different experience to our Jamaican beaches and cruises. And we found it here.

Having looked at Warners before, we expected plush, glamourous and expensive, and in one respect we were surprised to find that Corton was neither. Expensive it certainly isn't, with an advertised half board two night break with entertainment for £112/person. That's cheap by anyone's standards. Now, the accommodation wasn't exactly plush, but it was respectable and clean, and up to a good standard. I don't know why, but I had envisaged a standard hotel sat next to the chalet style rooms, but of course this isn't the case. All of the accommodation appears to be in chalets. Our only previous experiences of chalets have been cheap breaks in disgusting, delapidated chalet blocks in Pontins, and we were therefore pleasantly relieved to find that the quality of accommodation is much (no, far) better than the previous mentioned establishments we had visited, and in line with many 3-4 star hotels we've stayed in.

We had booked a standard seaview chalet on the first floor (all chalets seem to be in two storey blocks) but after my wife sprained her ankle badly, on arrival we decided to upgrade for the duration of the break to one of their newly refurbished Premier rooms, as this was the only one left on the ground floor.

The room was immaculate, with new furniture, carpets and curtains, and relatively new bathroom fittings. Housekeeping certainly wasn't an issue, and in true hotel style your room is made up every day. Tea and coffee facilities, hair dryer and even an iron/ironing board puts the room facilities on par with some 3-4 star rooms.

Sadly, the room's ex-chalet status was betrayed on the odd occasion. Thin walls that struggled on occasion to cope with some noisy neighbours - additional soundproofing perhaps? Mousetrap style plumbing in the bathroom which if thought through at the design stage would have been stripped out and replaced or at least hidden when the bathroom was upgraded to rid itself of the old look, and the noisy ricketty ventilation fan would have been changed perhaps for a more silent model?

The room boasts a large double glazed window on to the decked courtyard area surrounded by seagrasses, but for some reason I never could shake the feeling that people could see in while we were sleeping, even with the curtains closed of course. Guess we're not used to having ground floor rooms. I think full length quality curtains and a decent luxury mattress would finish the room off nicely and help lose that chalet feeling.

Enough niggling. A refurbishment programme is underway, all credit to Warners. Some chalets had been turned into suites, with living rooms. The exteriors were being given a sort of white washed and pastel coloured cladded look which matched the main building, and helped enhance the coastal village theme, and take away the old fashioned 1960's "Pontins" feel. Don't get me wrong - this resort is quite small and doesn't ever come over as a large holiday chalet resort.

Having met and spoke to one of the managers, I was advised of future plans to introduce brand new lodge style accommodation and a complete refurbishment of the main building, with new outdoor actvities, which sounds quite exciting.

The staff were exceptional. We were arriving late due to bad traffic/weather, and a quick call to reception ensured that the kitchen saved dinner for us. As it was we arrived in time for the main meal, and having mentioned my wife's plight, they quickly arranged the ground floor accommodation for us too.

Dinner each night in the main restaurant/ballroom is mainly a carvery plus a speciality. The carvery was excellent and plentiful, and the specialities looked good too. Buffet service salad bar was available if you didn't fancy anything from the good selection of starters which are served by your waiter/waitress, and equally there is a good selection of deserts or cheeseboard to finish your meal. There is two sittings to help spread the flow around the carvery (30 mins apart) but once seated you get the table for the evening. Ours was at the rear of the room which still had a good view of the stage, while others had an amazing view worthy of many good dinner/show venues.

The entertainment on our weekend was the ratpack, a very professional trio who were thoroughly entertaining and added to the value of our short break.

Breakfast is a self service buffet and easily came up to our De Vere and P&O cruise experiences in terms of quality and variety.

Our waitress for the weekend, Tea, (Her badge said Tea mMember - get her a name badge for goodness sake!) was exceptional as were all the staff on site.

Inside, again the ballroom and dining room was clean and tidy but showing signs of wear, and again I was enlightened about the plans to refurbish the main building by the very competent holiday sales manager, Mr Dan.

The village boasts many return visitors who had obviously struck up strong friendships with the staff at the resort, which is always a good sign.

We hadn't realised the village had an indoor pool so hadn't come properly equipped, but it looked quite inviting.

So to summarise. Not quite our expectations of a Warner experience, but even to their own admission it is slightly different to their normal model. Slightly tired accommodation drops a rating point in my opinion, but in fairness to them I will revisit next year so that I can update my report with some hopefully good news.

Staff are five star, along with some of the better establishments we have visited, and easily are on their way to providing a "Cruise on Land" experience.

Entertainment and activities were plentiful, if not to our normal style, and the apalling weather unfortunately did nothing to enhance our stay.

Well done all , see you next year.

Room Tip: I would definitely upgrade to at least Premier, to ensure you get the most recent refurbished chalet...

We have just returned from a weekend stay here, this being our first such stay at a Warners venue. I was very pleasantly surprised; the room, although small, was very nice and had all we needed for a two night stay. It was very clean, as were all the public areas and grounds. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the entertainment very enjoyable. The food was excellent and comparable to any quality hotel, there was plenty of it and I'm afraid my diet hit the dust for the duration. I would recommend this report in an instant and we will certainly be visiting further Warners venues

We have recently returned from our third stay at Corton and I have to say that it surpassed our high expectations in almost every way. The food was of excellent quality and quantity and the service received from our waiters Matt and Sam was admirable. The room was clean, well decorated and kept clean and tidy by domestic staff. The pool and other leisure facilities were more than adequate and the entertainments staff were up to the usual high standard.
A thoroughly enjoyable holiday and a pleasure to receive such good service from all the well trained and competent staff. Well done Warners and well done Corton
