Yet another great meal at The New Inn this weekend. This place never disappoints. We were welcomed in by the lovely Helen Ball, who had organised a table for me in my favourite spot in this pub. A starter of crispy Whitebait, a main of the Salmon and the Affogato to finish a delightful meal. This dessert was a chocolate sponge and coffee ice-cream with hot expresso coffee and amaretto biscuits. This pub has a friendly, grown-up atmosphere and the staff never seem to falter with their service and manners.

We arriived for lunch with 4 of us, and the bar staff initially ignored us and after they eventually made eye contact, we asked for a table. The place was freezing cold in atmosphere and temperature. Few tabkes were left which is always a good sign. We ordered at the bar and food arrived, and the disappointment continued.
Meat was uniniteresting, vegatables boring and the whole experience continued to underwhelm.
As paid and chatted to the lady in charge she said she would be glad when there were no people....perhaps others should heed that coment.

I'm surprised to see some of the other reviewers on here describe the New Inn so negatively. Having visited on numerous occasions though the service has not been fast at times we have found them to be very helpful and friendly and even have gone out of their way to let us eat off the lunch menu when lunch service was meant to have finished.

Coming from Newtown Creek area we enjoy walking to the pub and if the weather is nice eating in the garden. The food isn't spectacular but is good pub grub and the lunch menu is very reasonable.

Pros: Nice garden area with plenty of benches, tasty pub food, intimate indoor atmosphere

Cons: Prices are on the high side, service can be slow

Overall we love having the New Inn nearby and always take visitors to the Island here.

What the New Inn at Shalfleet has in its favour are a pleasant garden, an authentic old-pub ambience, very friendly and obliging staff and a very wide menu selection in which what is offered changes by the time of day you wish to eat. We visited just after lunchtime when the "afternoon" menu was in operation and each ordered what, despite the more fancy name on the menu, was essentially a cheese sandwich with salad garnish. For all the extensive menu listed in menu books and on a blackboard, the kitchen had run out of brown bread. The sandwich was very generous with its locally baked crusty white bread, but the cheese - almost certainly not of a mature strength - was overwhelmed by a very nice apricot relish. I am surely not alone in believing that a cheese sandwich should taste of cheese. The cheapest white wine by- the- glass was very good. We overheard another customer being told that the pub had run out of rose wine. Very strange!

We try to visit at least once when we come across from the mainland and on this occasion were somewhat disappointed, compared to previous visits. Echoing a previous reviewer, portion sizes definately smaller. Chips overcooked. Bar service terrible. One person only serving at the restaurant end. Waiting staff very friendly. Pork belly soft and not really crispy. Waited nearly 15 minutes for our bill and had to ask for it 3 times! Potted crab really tasty but accompanying crisp bread broke up in my hands. It was so thin I could hardly spread it on it. Will read recent reviews before visiting again.2
