We visited Galena for the first time and we stayed three nights. The upside of this hotel is its centrality - we parked the car and left it. Lots of great walking - some rather hilly but the views are worth the effort. Had we brought our bikes, even more adventures would have presented themselves. The hotel is the oldes operating hotel in Illinois - the desk staff was rather laid-back - not at all welcoming with sort of blasé attitude. No offer to help with bags, etc. Amenities are just minimal. No in room mini-fridge, marginal coffee maker. You are paying for the location and little else. Galena is a great destination, the DeSoto House is a great place to stay for a first visit to a great small river town with interesting history.

Room Tip: Inner court yard rooms seem to be cheaper but are very quiet and away from street noise.

Location, location, location.....they say that for a good reason. The best and only thing Desoto House has going for it is the location. My husband and I stayed here over the weekend - the room was large and bed was nice and firm. However, the wallpaper has been up for years....every seem is showing and fraying, or has wallpaper missing. Carpet dingy, floors in bathroom not very clean. The only reason to stay here is because it is perfectly located and makes for an easy trip. You can walk to everything here easily.

Once again, my wife and I enjoyed our recent two night trip to Galena. The DeSoto House Hotel was a big part of the experience. Three words can sum it up nicely.

Location, location, location.

Pretty simple, huh? Located right on main street, staying at the DeSoto allows you to arrange your day without any concern about logistics or in the very busy summer weekends, car parking. I know a good argument can be made about staying in the numerous Guest Houses; I agree, but you still have to navigate the hills if the main street "strip" is your primary place of enjoyment.

The DeSoto actually has several things that we didn't like about the room (#327). Since it is a hotel from the 1800's, the lighting isn't as robust as newer hotels. The wall outlets were sparse and spaced without much thought given to usage. The bathroom lacks for counter space. The flat screen TV was encased in a dresser that pointed away from the bed (at a 90* angle). All these are usually irritants for me and would require more of a negative review. However, the rooms also have their positives. The shower head is modern, high, and with good water flow. The queen bed was very comfortable. Room temperature was easy to adjust.

We elected to stay on a Wednesday and Thursday night to take advantage of the mid-weed specials. We paid $149 and it included free breakfast each morning off the hotel menu, not some weak scrambled eggs buffet. We ordered Florentine Omlette, Eggs Benedict, Belgian Waffles, and an Egg Skillet during our stay. Our package included two Trolley tickets as well as two tickets to the Grant Museum. All useful and easily made the price a bargain. So much so, that in future trips to Galena, it will be hard-pressed for us to book a weekend date when you also factor in the less crowded Main street and day trips.

To us, there is very high value in having everything so very close. When passing by the DeSoto on shopping excursions, we would stop in and drop off packages, grab a drink, and resume our day. The location was also ideal for pre-and-post dinner, as we could elect to stay out later or hurry along if we're running late.

Last year we really liked the Irish Boutique Hotel on hwy 20. While both are acceptable, the DeSoto should be your first lodging option of the two. Remember, it's all about location, location, and location.

If you want to stay downtown this is THE place! Everything is walking distance which is important because parking is impossible on weekends. DeSoto House has free multi-level parking. There are three (3) restaurants located on the premises and a very nice bar. The staff was warm, friendly and welcoming. Our room (No 313 the Stephen Douglas) was a large corner room that was nicely appointed with a comfortable bed. We did not experience any problems with street noise. The complimentary wifi worked perfectly.

Room Tip: Rooms 313 and 213 are large corner rooms.

The DeSoto House is a wonderful place to stay! Our company just had its annual conference there, and Deb Bertucci as well as her staff go above & beyond to make everyone's stay a great experience. It is nice to walk out the door and have access to great shopping as well as a multitude of historical things to see and do. Great job everyone!

I made reservations for a king junior suite. I was so disappointed in the shoddy workmanship. The PVC pipe for the sprinkler system was in plain view. The covers for the sprinklers were missing. The floor actually sloped down. Horrible patch jobs in the plaster or cracks not even fixed. I respect the historic building but for $185 a night I expect better quality accommodations.
Word of Advice - avoid the Ralph Waldo Emerson suite.

I have stayed here before and never had such a horrific room. The other rooms we have stayed at were delightful but this last stay killed it for me.

Room Tip: Spend the extra for a Main St. View.
