We visited Galena for the first time and we stayed three nights. The upside of this hotel is its centrality - we parked the car and left it. Lots of great walking - some rather hilly but the views are worth the effort. Had we brought our bikes, even more adventures would have presented themselves. The hotel is the oldes operating hotel in Illinois - the desk staff was rather laid-back - not at all welcoming with sort of blasé attitude. No offer to help with bags, etc. Amenities are just minimal. No in room mini-fridge, marginal coffee maker. You are paying for the location and little else. Galena is a great destination, the DeSoto House is a great place to stay for a first visit to a great small river town with interesting history.
