My wife and I had the best ribs and a great server, Stacey, at this gem of a restuarant! Stacey recommended the ribs, the special for that evening, and she really made us feel welcome. She was prompt, attentive, and a real sweetheart.

This was our fourth trip to Galena and the third time we have stayed at the DeSoto House Hotel. Our first trip was before the hotel's massive renovation in the 1980s. This time the atmosphere was different. It was like a big party from the time we arrived until we left. After we checked in and took a quick tour of Main Street, we returned to the hotel to a loud and boisterous sound that resembled a World Series victory. We tracked the sound to the Green Street Tavern and Restaurant on the first floor just off the lobby. Lots of noise, lots of people and lots of good food and fun. It wasn't like this the last time we were there. Popular items on the menu were chicken salad on croissant, Mac 'n Cheese, chicken quesadillas and a good ole cheeseburger. Green Street has a corner pub atmosphere--I was looking for a hockey game on the TV but the patrons apparently preferred baseball--with wine, cocktails, homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. Great pub food. It's a perfect spot to plan your shopping excursion on Main Street.

Nice restaurant in downtown Galena. Our group had lunch there and it was very good. Chicken salad on croissant was the special of the day and was excellent! The Mac n cheese bites were tasty, and the others enjoyed their chicken quesadillas and burgers. Would definitely return.

We had dinner at the Green street Tavern in the De Soto hotel. We booked the midweek (monday?) special and got a fifty dollar coupon. The food and service were first-rate. Our server and a big party next to us and she really worked to keep everyone happy.

The DeSoto House Hotel is definitely worth stopping in for a look while on a visit to Galena. It is a historic structure and the lobby and main restaurant are very attractive and the tavern, with it's front bar room and rear dining area, is also very nice. 3 of us arrived on Saturday and parked just a block away for free on the street. We were ahead of any lunch rush in Green Street Tavern and were seated immediately. The service was very friendly, and although our server disappeared at times, other servers and the bartender were willing to help cover our table. The burgers are very good, and we tried the sweet potato waffle fries and the garlic fries; sweet potato fries were very flavorful and somewhat sweet, and the garlic fries were okay but a bit bland, maybe due to being compared with the sweet po fries. The salmon sandwich was excellent, too.

We also enjoyed sitting there and relaxing after our 2 1/2 hour drive. A wedding party was congregating in the lobby and several were "warming up" sitting at the bar, and it was fun to see the tuxedos and wedding gowns. Also, General Grant was pacing on the sidewalk outside as he gives walking tours of historic Galena at 10am and noon on Saturday and he was about to start a tour. (We would have joined him if the tour was 1pm, noon would seem to conflict with most peoples' lunch times.)

All in all, a very tasty and relaxing lunch in an attractive and historical setting.

PS. In nicer weather there is an outside row of tables along the sidestreet right off Main St.
