“Disgusting!”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

As promised, our keys were tacked to a cork board on the office door, however, because there was no sign, we blew by the office and had to turn around and look for it. The office was shabby and in disrepair. The grounds were overgrown and cluttered.

Upon arriving at the cabin, I was disappointed. The door skin was peeling and wasps were flying around the bottom of the door. There were no flowers, pots or bushes in front of the cabin which made it look very plain.

In the cabin, it was quaint, but the furniture is old and mismatched. The queen size bed only had 2 pillows on it so if you like additional pillows, bring your own. We took the pillows from the bed in the loft. The curtains and shades in the cabin are water stained. The wood floor was clean but worn.

Lighting the fireplace would have been romantic, but the gas is shut off May through September. Bummer!

The bathroom was DISGUSTING!!! There were golden brown spots on the ceiling above the sink and toilet. I'd like to think they were coffee but I don't think so. The bathtub was a wreck. While the website boasts of sitting in the Kohler whirlpool and watching the stars, it didn't happen for me. First, there was a dirty hand print in the bottom of the bathtub. Second, a cleaning towel was left in a corner. The water is very rusty so the bathtub was very stained. The jets had yellowed and the water had a metallic smell. The walls around the bathtub and faucet had significant water damage and the white melamine paneling around the bathtub was peeling.

Our first continental breakfast was waiting for us when we arrived. Two individual cups of yogurt, 2 individual cups of cinnamon applesauce and 2 cherry cheese danishes like you would find in a vending machine or convenience store. We passed on the breakfast but tried to make coffee. We got about a cup of sludge! The coffee pot hadn't been cleaned in years! After a lovely breakfast in town, we went to Walmart and bought a large jug of vinegar to clean the coffee pot! Continental breakfast the second day was delivered by Frank who knocked on our door, held out the basket and when I took it, he turned around and left. Not a word was spoken by him! He brought us 2 bananas, 2 cups of yogurt and 2 pre-packed Otis Spunkmeyer muffins. Another pass on breakfast for us but at least the coffee maker worked due to several cycles of vinegar!

The female owner (never introduced herself) complained of trouble finding help, needing a double knee replacement, and being too busy to shave down the dogs on the property. Yes, she needs help! I'm sorry she needs a double knee replacement, but please, take care of your property! Also, there is no excuse for the dogs being penned in an overgrown weed patch and not being shaved or bathed.

The second night we stayed, we walked to see the Alpacas by the office. The owners son was there, yet he didn't speak to us, even when we said hi. We tried to pet the Alpacas but they were as friendly as the people who own the place. They ignored us!

We stayed in the Franklin cabin, next to where the owners live. There were vehicles and clutter all around the cabin. It wasn't a pretty view looking out the window so we left the blinds closed. The water stains on the shades were better than looking at their clutter.
The website boasts no mosquitoes but we were eaten alive looking at the night sky. Bring bug spray!

We paid $440 to stay two nights and we were extremely disappointed. It was not worth the money we paid! My advice to you is take a pass on this place and find something better if you want to come to Galena!

We love log cabins and were very much looking forward to our stay. We specifically chose to stay here because of the fireplace and whirlpool tub. Unfortunately, we couldn't use the whirlpool tub because the water wasn't warm enough and it was extremely discolored due to iron concentration in the water, as well as quite visible "iron-eating bacteria" added, which did not translate into an inviting experience. The fireplace went out after 15 minutes because of winds that blew the pilot light out, but the innkeeper never returned two calls to help us. Needless to say, our experience was not what we had anticipated. When the innkeeper arrived around 8:30 pm to drop off a morning basket of goods for breakfast, we asked him if he could get the fireplace to work, which he did and he was friendly and nice. Our stay was still disappointing though for what we paid. I think the cabins would be more appealing with more trees and yard around instead of the dirt pasture with alpacas to look at.

We decided to stay at the Galena Log Cabins on our visit to Galena because we thought the kids would get a kick out of sleeping in a log cabin. Check-in was very easy at the "office" and we stayed in the Adams cabin. Our first impression was "wow, this is VERY rustic" (said with concern) as we looked from the outside. This place is also an Alpaca and Golden-doodle farm with the pens right outside the cabins. Once we went inside, we were pleasantly surprised with how clean and nicely outfitted the cabin was. The owner (very nice) also brought over a basket of breakfast goodies, fruit and coffee/tea selections which we did use for breakfast. The cabin (which is one big room; with gas fireplace, queen bed, sitting area, eating table, mini fridge/freezer, coffeepot and microwave- as shown on the pictures) has a loft for additional sleeping space (one bed and 2-floor cots for the kids)- we had 3 adults and 3 kids. The bathroom was clean and large (addition built onto the cabin), however the area around the jacuzzi tub needed updating/fixing from water damage and the shower fixtures were rusty from the hard well-water.
I'm giving 4-stars on the basis of a Rustic Log Cabin, not a 4-star quality accommodation. Also the coffee pot was broke- though I did not tell them, so I won't take off for that ;)
Tips: You will enjoy it if you like rustic places- if you are a fancy hotel type, this is not for you. Though it was rainy, I can imagine the stars would be beautiful at night and there are fire pits and camp chairs provided. There is a bluff overlook to the Mississippi River nearby with hiking trails that is a wonderful site. Bring DVD's for the kids (yes there is a player) because the satellite TV has no kids selections except for PBS (ages 3-8), or better yet, don't turn on the TV and bring some board games!!

If you are looking for rest and relaxation away from it all this is the place for you. Great place to bring your dog as well. We were here for a long weekend. Check-in and check-out was easy. The cabin was cute and roomy. Clean rooms. Continental breakfast basket is delivered ot you the evening before. Include pastries, fruit and yogurt. Everything was very good. After reading other reviews we did decide to bring a case of water and a flashlight. They do have a flashlight in the cabin for your use. The sky was clear on Saturday night and the star gazing was awesome. The alpacas are also a lot of fun to watch too. My fifteen year old son had a great time here. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Bring a case of water and a flashlight. :-) Great place to bring your dog.

This is a great place to get away for peace and quiet. It is a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of downtown Galena. The cabins are very rustic, kind of like a fancy camping experience. The Alpacas were fun to watch and pet, very cute animals. The golden doodles were pretty frisky and got pretty excited any time they saw us coming or going. Frank was a great host and very informative about the night sky. If you are not good with extra iron in your water bring plenty of bottled water with you. The cabin had a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot. Frank brought a basket at night with coffee, tea, yogurt, muffins, and fruit cup for the next morning. The only drawback I have about this place was the price, it is way over the value.

It is said on their website that visitors will notice that the stars hardly twinkle. I can attest to this claim.
We went there for the Perseid meteor shower and indeed saw many meteors. The weather cooperated and there was no cloud at all the first night
Indeed the sky was so clear and the stars really did not seem to twinkle much.
If star gazing is your prime objective, I would highly recommend this place.
One thing to note. The water is more than a little rusty. Bottled water is a necessity if you are particular about this.
The cabin we stayed in was reasonably clean although its age did show.

If the cabin hadn't been $200 a night, I would have given a higher rating. We all enjoyed the alpacas, and the cabin was very cute and more spacious than a typical hotel room. However, there were dozens of hornets everywhere and 2 of us were stung. We had an issue with the coffee pot and when I approached the owner about it, she was very short with me. There was a trick to using the pot and I'm sure she had to explain it many times to other guests, but a short explanation could have been posted in the room and I wouldn't have had to bother her. In our other interactions with her, she was much more pleasant. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but for the price we paid we expected more.
