As promised, our keys were tacked to a cork board on the office door, however, because there was no sign, we blew by the office and had to turn around and look for it. The office was shabby and in disrepair. The grounds were overgrown and cluttered.
Upon arriving at the cabin, I was disappointed. The door skin was peeling and wasps were flying around the bottom of the door. There were no flowers, pots or bushes in front of the cabin which made it look very plain.
In the cabin, it was quaint, but the furniture is old and mismatched. The queen size bed only had 2 pillows on it so if you like additional pillows, bring your own. We took the pillows from the bed in the loft. The curtains and shades in the cabin are water stained. The wood floor was clean but worn.
Lighting the fireplace would have been romantic, but the gas is shut off May through September. Bummer!
The bathroom was DISGUSTING!!! There were golden brown spots on the ceiling above the sink and toilet. I'd like to think they were coffee but I don't think so. The bathtub was a wreck. While the website boasts of sitting in the Kohler whirlpool and watching the stars, it didn't happen for me. First, there was a dirty hand print in the bottom of the bathtub. Second, a cleaning towel was left in a corner. The water is very rusty so the bathtub was very stained. The jets had yellowed and the water had a metallic smell. The walls around the bathtub and faucet had significant water damage and the white melamine paneling around the bathtub was peeling.
Our first continental breakfast was waiting for us when we arrived. Two individual cups of yogurt, 2 individual cups of cinnamon applesauce and 2 cherry cheese danishes like you would find in a vending machine or convenience store. We passed on the breakfast but tried to make coffee. We got about a cup of sludge! The coffee pot hadn't been cleaned in years! After a lovely breakfast in town, we went to Walmart and bought a large jug of vinegar to clean the coffee pot! Continental breakfast the second day was delivered by Frank who knocked on our door, held out the basket and when I took it, he turned around and left. Not a word was spoken by him! He brought us 2 bananas, 2 cups of yogurt and 2 pre-packed Otis Spunkmeyer muffins. Another pass on breakfast for us but at least the coffee maker worked due to several cycles of vinegar!
The female owner (never introduced herself) complained of trouble finding help, needing a double knee replacement, and being too busy to shave down the dogs on the property. Yes, she needs help! I'm sorry she needs a double knee replacement, but please, take care of your property! Also, there is no excuse for the dogs being penned in an overgrown weed patch and not being shaved or bathed.
The second night we stayed, we walked to see the Alpacas by the office. The owners son was there, yet he didn't speak to us, even when we said hi. We tried to pet the Alpacas but they were as friendly as the people who own the place. They ignored us!
We stayed in the Franklin cabin, next to where the owners live. There were vehicles and clutter all around the cabin. It wasn't a pretty view looking out the window so we left the blinds closed. The water stains on the shades were better than looking at their clutter.
The website boasts no mosquitoes but we were eaten alive looking at the night sky. Bring bug spray!
We paid $440 to stay two nights and we were extremely disappointed. It was not worth the money we paid! My advice to you is take a pass on this place and find something better if you want to come to Galena!
