Abbey's High Street Bed and Breakfast

We could not have been more pleased with our stay in Galena at Abbey's High Street. We planned a trip for my wife's birthday and picked Abbey's from choices on the Galena/Joe Daviess County website. My wife and I were intrigued by the history of the home, liked the location and really wanted to see the gardens and gazebo.
When we arrived in Galena, we took a trolley tour to get our bearings. Johnny, our tour guide asked where we were staying and said wonderful things about Abbey's. "The people who run Abbey's are some of the nicest people", he said. And he was right.
Checking in, we were instantly charmed by the home itself and Kathleen. After welcoming us she gave us a tour and some of the history, showed us to our room and left us on our own saying, "I always tell guests to enjoy it as if it's your home too".
We put our bags away and had some delicious lemonade in one of the parlors then strolled through the beautiful and well manicured English gardens. During our stay, we spent a lot of time enjoying a spectacular view of Galena and Grant Park from the porch swing in the gazebo. U.S. Grant and the doctor that originally owned the home were friends and used to sit in the same spot enjoying the same view.
The 1850's home is so delightful. Our room had a Jacuzzi, private bath, fireplace and antique canopy bed. The home and gardens are immaculately clean and tidy. The breakfast was phenomenal with items fresh from the kitchen garden.
Abbey's is located just a few blocks from Main Street so it was very convenient to pop into town and do touristy stuff then return to the quiet privacy of the house and gardens. That is exactly what we did for our entire stay. We would get up early and go canoeing or shopping then come back "home" and relax enjoying some of the wine we bought on the gazebo or in the Jacuzzi.
Our hosts were so welcoming and we really did feel very much at home. One of the nights we stayed there was a full house and yet we still felt as though we had the whole house and gardens to ourselves. There are many different areas of the garden to enjoy and several different porches and sitting areas so you can mingle with other guests or enjoy your privacy.
We have been telling all our friends what a great trip to Galena we had and staying at Abbey's High Street is truly what made our getaway so special. Thank you Kathleen, Tom (and Queenie)!

My husband and I have stayed in B&Bs in many different countries, including Britain (England, Wales, Northern Ireland), Israel, Canada and all over the US. Abbey's High Street B&B is one of the best we've stayed at. This is a lovingly restored pre-Civil war house, owned & hosted by a wonderful couple, Tom and Kathleen . The house is adorned with many period pieces and comfortably furnished; the gardens (and gazebo!) are delightful, a delicious full breakfast is served every morning and our hosts were founts of information about the house, the town and area. We enjoyed many conversations with them as well as the other guests. We stayed for a long weekend and loved it; will definitely plan to return to this delightful B&B for our next trip to Galena.

Room Tip: All rooms are on the second floor and each has its own private bathroom; we stayed in the 'Eliza...

The pictures don't do this bed and breakfast justice. You need to see this lovely home in person. I was very intrigued with the attention to detail that I witnessed in every room. Kathleen's background in antiques is duly noted throughout this beautiful historic setting. Adding to the whole experience was knowing that the doctor who revolutionized surgical practices during the Civil War, lived in this enchanting home. Oh, and the breakfast was scrumptious!

We celebrated our 22nd anniversary in Galena, and Abbey's High Street B&B made it the perfect weekend. From the moment we walked in the door, we felt welcomed and comfortable. Tom and Kathleen are terrifically friendly, but honor their guests with privacy as well. They have done an incredible job restoring this beautiful home! All the more respectable because it is the work of their own hands and pursuit of their dream. We enjoyed the pretty gardens, the delicious breakfasts, and the convenience of walking to town - yet being high enough on the hill to have a quiet respite from Main Street. Top notch all the way! Cozy, comfortable, warm hosts...feel like we made friends and learned so much about the local history. We absolutely look forward to return visits.

We had four couples in our party, so we rented all the rooms for the weekend. Tom and Kathleen were perfect hosts. Their home is beautiful, and the breakfasts were delicious. We had a great gathering space. We definitely plan on staying at Abbey's High Street Bed and Breakfast again.

We are so excited because today after work we leave for our new favorite B and B in Galena, Abbey's High Street. We stayed there in October and planned to come back this weekend while we were there. We've stayed in several B and B's in Galena, and none were bad, but Abbey's is our favorite. Kathleen and Tom are spectacular hosts and Kathleen's breakfast is fabulous! The rooms are beautiful and comfortable as is the common living areas. A beautiful gazebo and front porch make for wonderful quiet time settings. Can't wait to get there tonight!!

We stayed at the Abbey High Street after reading the other positive reviews on tripadvisor, and we couldn't have been more pleased. This was a perfect location to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Kathleen and Tom (and Queenie the dog) were so welcoming and wonderful hosts, without being intrusive. Our room was very clean and comfortable. It had a private bathroom, and an in-room jacuzzi, which was relaxing after long walks downtown. Kathleen's home-made breakfasts were just so delicious. The other visiting guests made for easy conversation during breakfast. There was also a lovely garden and gazebo, which was great for coffee in the morning, or a cocktail at night by an open fire and some star gazing. One morning we were there to find hummingbirds flying around by the feeder.

The B&B is located about 3 blocks from the main street in Galena, and offered a nice view from the room we stayed in (see photo, although a bit blurry from the window screen). The building was built in about 1850, and Kathleen & Tom have done an amazing job working on restoring the building. Kathleen & Tom, thank you again for making our anniversary special. We'll certainly stay at the Abbey High Street in the future.

Room Tip: Get the jacuzzi room if you plan on walking a lot. It's a great way to treat yourselves.
