“Good news: The General is back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

The first time we visited Galena, the Generals restaurant in the DeSoto House Hotel was open. And the food was delicious. The last time we visited Galena, the Generals restaurant was closed. Too bad. This time, it was open. Good for us. The decor has changed and the menu has changed, too. All for the better. With so many outstanding restaurants in Galena competing for the tourists' dollars, the Generals sometimes gets overlooked. The Green Tavern upstairs probably is more popular. But the Generals' menu is unlike any other restaurant in town. I haven't met anyone who has dined there who was disappointed. The trick, I suppose, is to find a way to attract more customers in a town that sells burgers, pizza and pasta. Once you sample the menu, I think you'll be sold. It includes many items you won't find anywhere else. For example, the appetizers feature the Onion Haystack (thinly sliced onions dipped in seasoned batter and fried to a golden brown with a side of BBQ sauce, Infantry on Horseback (shrimp wrapped in bacon and broiled) and Stuff Cavalry Caps (mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, topped with bread crumbs and baked. The entrees feature the Drunken Soldier (breast of chicken), Veal Florentine (thin slices of veal), Cornish Pastry (a mixture of lean ground chuck, potatoes, onions and carrots rolled into a pastry pouch, a concoction the old-time lead miners took to work in the 1800s and Tips and Spaetzle (seared tenderloin beef tips, mushrooms, pearl onions with a rich burgundy sauce severed over sauteed spaetzle topped with sour cream). Seafood? Try the stuffed shrimp, poached North Atlantic salmon, tilapia DeSoto, Macadamia crusted Mahi-Mahi or sauteed North Atlantic salmon. Steaks? Grant's filet mignon and filet of beef with Shitake mushroom sauce are very popular. So are baby back ribs and General Parker's New York strip. A friend said the roast duckling is exceptional. Trust me, you won't go away hungry or disappointed.

“Don't Order the Pork Chop”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2014

While recently in Galena, IL we decided to visit The General Restaurant in the Desoto House Hotel. As it was, we were one of the few folks in the restaurant and the service overall was very good. Quiet with nice music in the background. However, when it got to the reason we were there, to dine, I was a bit disappointed. Bottom line, "don't order the pork chop." Decent size but VERY, VERY dry and not very tender. I tried some steak sauce but that did not help much either. In any event, there have to be better choices on the menu.

“Wonderful food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2014

We had a mid-week overnight at the Desoto House Hotel. We had dinner at Generals Restaurant and the food was wonderful. The service is very prompt and the waitresses were really helpful and always had a smile on their face. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good place to have dinner while in town. The piano player was a nice touch at dinner.

“Hidden Treasure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

This establishment is located in the Desoto House Hotel, downtown Galena. My wife and I have stayed at the hotel many times but never patronized this restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised! The food was very good, the service was excellent and the wine list was above average. The roast Duckling is exceptional!
Don't buy all the hype about other restaurants on Main St , this one is every bit as good, and better than most.
Get a window seat so you can watch people walking, through the atrium. Make your resv.for after 730pm since most of the families with children have moved on, if you're looking for a quiet spot. Also, live music on the wknds!

“Did New Years Eve with a big group”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2014

Lots of variety for everyone from burgers to seafood and streaks. I had a crusted salmon with blueberries and strawberries reduction sauce which was very good and my girlfriend had scallops over linguini that was excellent. Great Selection of wines and lots of history here in the Desoto Hotel. The General is located in the lower level of the hotel.
