“A LITTLE SLICE OF EUROPE”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

I really enjoyed the warm bacon dressing on my spinach salad. The crunchy bread complemented all meals. Two couples enjoyed 4 different entrees. The pork and veal schnitzels were ample servings as was the half chicken. This made for great leftovers. The sauerbraten was also good-sized. Sauerkraut, red cabbage, spaetzel and homemade frites were enjoyed by each of us. Wine selection is not great but adequate for pairing. Good choice for varied tastes. Would have liked to try a seafood dish - maybe next time.

“Excellent, fresh food..service depends on server”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We had dinner here on a Sunday evening. The restaurant is small but cozy, decorated in a true bistro style. The wine was delicious, and the food was very fresh. I had a garden salad with the house vinaigrette for starters. Everything tasted as if it were right out of the garden, and the vinaigrette was light and delicious. We also had the weinerschnitzel for our entree. I eat German food frequently and this was one of the best schnitzels I have had. The veal was tender and the breading was light and very tasty. Our only complaint was the service. There were two waitstaff handling the 14 tables. Our waitress seemed frazzled and didn't do a good job of describing the wines or the desserts. She also was slow to check on us, and I had to ask her to remove the bread plates before she brought dessert. However, the other waiter was fabulous from what we could tell. He handled his tables with ease and even stopped to help us on occasion. If we would have had him, I would have given the restaurant 5 stars. It can be loud and it gets crowded, so make a reservation and beware the bell on the front door when customers don't close the door gently...it startled my dining companion more than once! Overall, a wonderful place for fresh and delicious food.

“Lovely meal”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

Stopped in Galena on a driving trip. After walking through the town, we picked Fritz & Frites for lunch. It was the prettiest place to eat in town. Lovely setting, nice service. The menu is not huge, but good options. We ordered the chopped salad and the fig & goat cheese salad. Both were delicious. It was a little slow, but if we had not been passing through, I might not have noticed.

“Maybe an "off" night?”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Our first visit was generally quite good, so we returned. This time, service was slow and inattentive. The delay from order to service was excessive, even after reasonably allowing that each entree is prepared as you wait. And there was only one other party in the room! Food tends to be served warm, but not hot. Cold pasta isn't appealing. It was winter when we visited, and the diniing room was noticeably chilly, so maybe well-warmed food was too much to expect? There were good points: Flavors are wonderful and the wine list is extensive. The menu is diverse and appealing. Cleanliness is A+. Prices are high, and potentially worth it. But after our last visit, well, it will be our last visit. For a premium restaurant, I expect better effort and performance on the details.
