My husband and I staying at the Hellman Guest House this past weekend for a quick overnight getaway; it was our first Bed and Breakfast experience and it left a fantastic first impression. As others have mentioned the house is in a great location high on the hillside overlooking downtown. It is a Victorian home with original hardwood trim and tall ceilings. My first impression was that it was very clean and well kept. The large windows let in a lot of light giving the home a warm feel. Rita was there to welcome us and answer questions I had. We stayed in the Eleanor room at the back of the second floor (all the rooms are on that floor). It was a nice size room with a queen bed, two large windows that let in a lot of light and a small TV with VCR. The TV was dated, but since we are not there to watch TV it really didn't matter to us. The bathroom was 3-piece including a wonderful claw foot bathtub perfect for soaking! After arriving we walked down to main street, although it is winter the sidewalk and stairs were all clear and Rita took time to encourage us to walk along the sidewalk and not the street as there is a railing along the sidewalk and it has less sand which could be slick. Shopping was fun and we bought a bottle of wine to take back to our room. Rita helped us find wine glasses and a cork screw and was more than accommodating. The endless cookie jar was awesome and the cookies were some of the best I have EVER had!!! There was a electric fireplace in our room, one that plugs in - but still quaint and cute. Our room was also very homey, clean and quite, probably one of the most relaxing stays I have ever had away from home. Breakfast on Sunday was a German pancake that was mouth watering (I am still craving another), fresh fruit and raspberry scones, tea, coffee and juice. Our place was set in the center of the long regal dining table, I truly felt like a special guest! Although it was just parts of two days and one night, we had a great time in Galena and would absolutely stay at the Hellman House again!
