Hellman Guest House

My husband and I staying at the Hellman Guest House this past weekend for a quick overnight getaway; it was our first Bed and Breakfast experience and it left a fantastic first impression. As others have mentioned the house is in a great location high on the hillside overlooking downtown. It is a Victorian home with original hardwood trim and tall ceilings. My first impression was that it was very clean and well kept. The large windows let in a lot of light giving the home a warm feel. Rita was there to welcome us and answer questions I had. We stayed in the Eleanor room at the back of the second floor (all the rooms are on that floor). It was a nice size room with a queen bed, two large windows that let in a lot of light and a small TV with VCR. The TV was dated, but since we are not there to watch TV it really didn't matter to us. The bathroom was 3-piece including a wonderful claw foot bathtub perfect for soaking! After arriving we walked down to main street, although it is winter the sidewalk and stairs were all clear and Rita took time to encourage us to walk along the sidewalk and not the street as there is a railing along the sidewalk and it has less sand which could be slick. Shopping was fun and we bought a bottle of wine to take back to our room. Rita helped us find wine glasses and a cork screw and was more than accommodating. The endless cookie jar was awesome and the cookies were some of the best I have EVER had!!! There was a electric fireplace in our room, one that plugs in - but still quaint and cute. Our room was also very homey, clean and quite, probably one of the most relaxing stays I have ever had away from home. Breakfast on Sunday was a German pancake that was mouth watering (I am still craving another), fresh fruit and raspberry scones, tea, coffee and juice. Our place was set in the center of the long regal dining table, I truly felt like a special guest! Although it was just parts of two days and one night, we had a great time in Galena and would absolutely stay at the Hellman House again!

Room Tip: Loved the claw foot bath tub in the Eleanor room! I was amazed at how hot the water was and how hot...

Our two night stay at the Hellman Guest House was our first visit to Galena. The house is in a nice location, high on the hillside overlooking the town. We appreciated both the quiet setting and the beautiful home filled with antiques. Rita was a friendly hostess and very knowledgeable about the area. She gave us excellent advice about things to do and places to eat. She was also accommodating about our need for a late check-in.

We stayed in the Pauline Room, which was comfortable though small. The antique corner sink in the website photo is the sink for the room. The rest of the bathroom is accessed on the opposite side of the room. The configuration is similar for the Irene room. From peaking around the upstairs, I can say that the Hellman Suite is considerably larger and really beautiful. It also has a fabulous view and a more conventional bathroom set-up. The Eleanor room at the back was also bigger with a more convenient bathroom.

The House is within walking distance of downtown, but it is way up a very steep hill. It was more daunting than anticipated, so we chose to drive.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet. Hellman Suite is especially spacious and lovely.

thank you, Rita, for another wonderful weekend! This is the third or fourth time I've stayed and again enjoyed it immensely. Rita is a great hostess - breakfast was delicious both mornings, and the room was perfect. We stayed in the master suite as it has a roll-away bed (there was three of us). Anything we needed, Rita was happy to help (ice for our drinks, wine glasses, etc). I was happy to see she had a full house both nights. The garden is gorgeous, and the porch has such a pretty view - we went out both mornings before breakfast to enjoy our coffee. It's a short (but very steep!) walk to the downtown shopping, but we didn't mind. She also let us stay way past checkout so we could do some more shopping before we packed up. Our room was a tad warm (to be expected with such an old house) but the fan made it comfortable and we all slept very well.

Room Tip: Definitely choose the master suite if you can - the other rooms are a bit snug but still very pretty...

This house is simply lovely and perfect to stay in when visiting Galena. I appreciate that its not on Main street, where everything is loud and busy, it was great coming back to relax, and the views are to die for, overlooking the entire little city. The gardens are beautiful, and the porch is so nice to just sit and relax on while partaking in a highly competitive game of monopoly with the boyfriend. The house was so beautiful inside, homely, and Rita greeted us as soon as we came in. The little VHS collection was great, as we had a VCR the boyfriend and I enjoyed a viewing of Planes Trains and Automobiles while falling asleep.

The room was spacious, and breakfast was fabulous, european type. Things I have never had before, with always fresh pastries. Would highly recommend for a quick getaway to Galena.

My husband and I stayed at the Hellman Guest House the night after our wedding. It was the perfect place for us to unwind and decompress from all the wedding craziness. Sitting out on the porch over looking Main Street and Grant Park is so serene and relaxing. The house itself is gorgeous, and Rita does an amazing job keeping it up. Rita was hospitable and took great care of us. The breakfast she made for us the next morning was a delicious german pancake which my husband and I both loved. I would highly reccomend this house to couples looking for nice, relaxing get-away.

This was our first stay at Hellman Guest House. We instantly felt at home with the owner, Rita. She made us feel very welcome and appreciated. She helped us find just the right places to visit in the area. The other guests we met were all very interesting and we had some wonderful conversations around the breakfast table. The gourmet breakfasts were delightful. The presentation and flavor were right on target. At night we sat on the veranda on a swing overlooking the town of Galena. The house is high on a hill so the view is serene and very nostalgic. We would highly recommend this guest house to anyone.
