Hotel Golf Campoamor
Ranked #2 of 7 Hotels in Orihuela
Reviewed 24 March 2007

We had not planned to stay in this hotel but the villa that we had booked, just a mile or so from San Miguel de Salinas, sharing with another couple who are friends, had major problems with the water supply so we were forced to find alternative accommodation at short notice.

The owner of the villa that we had rented tried to find an altenative villa but when this was unsuccesful he recommended the Hotel Golf Campoamor. We manged to get an upgrade to a "Junior Suite" at the same rate as a double room so decided to stay for the last 6 days of our holiday.

The rooms were very clean and quite spacious but somewhat lacking in comfortable furnishings. There was a small fridge but this was stocked with drinks supplied by the hotel at the usual high prices. There were absolutely no facilities for making tea or coffee in the room which was a big drawback and not worthy of a hotel of this standard.

We had breakfast each morning, included in the room cost, and found this to be adequate if not up to a 4 star standard. There were two small DIY coffee machines which were inadequate for the number of people using the dining room and were constantly running out of water.

It soon became evident that the majority of guests were on a short stay visit to view property in the area, sponsored by Parador Properties and their reps commandeered most of the tables in the lounge and/or bar patio to give their "speil" their prospective cleints.

We did not eat any evening meals at the hotel, the prices were on the high side, and we used our hire car to travel in to San Miguel where there are a couple of decent and modestly priced restaurants. "The Market" is run by Brits and offered a good variety of reasonably priced dishes. "La Marquesa" is a Spanish run establishment which offered a wide variety of very inexpensive dishes and wines and the service was excellent.

In addition to the 18 golf course, the Campoamor hotel boasts a wide range of sports facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a gymnasium and 2 football pitches. However you have to pay extra for most of these albeit there is a discount for hotel guests. The outdoor pool was out of use during our stay and we considered a charge of 27 Euros for 2 hours in the indoor pool was far too much. We had a round of 18 holes on the Campoamor golf course for 40 Euros which was a fair price for a course which was well kept and quite challenging. However, there were water sprinklers all over the place and they often came on without warning during the round which was somewhat annoying.

Overall we were not impressed by this hotel and would not stay there again. Looking at the reviews for the La Zenia hotel, which is a few miles away on the coast this would seem to be a better bet if you are looking for a hotel in this area.

My wife and I Stayed at this hotel for the weekend 16th - 19th November 2006. This Hotel is 4* and its rooms and facilities are first class, unfortunateley the service is 1* or less. On finding reception (there are no signs), you check in, then have to walk outside along the front of the Hotel to the entrance to the rooms. There are no staff to help you with luggage etc so if you are elderly or infirmed you will have to carry it yourself. The hotel itself is completley occupied by people on inspection flights to buy property. All the public areas have salesman conducting buisness so there is no where to sit, and a peacfull drink at the bar is non exsistent. Because the guests are on these trips, the staff treat you like a 'freeloader'. We told them numerous times that we were full paying guests but they did not seem to believe us and were rude and surley. Fortunatley we were only had breakfast at the hotel but this was of poor quality and cold. Breakfast was supposed to be served up to 1030am. but when going down at 0930am they turned the lights out and started to clear everything away. When we complianed we were ignored and the staff just carried on. We complained to the satff at reception and asked to see a manager but there were none on duty. The bar in the evening closed at 2300, and if you wer sitting in the lounge they stood there wating for you to finish so they could lock up. At this time if you didnt want to go to your room you had to sit in reception. At no time were we told that the hotel was used for inspection flight customers and as result services fell below suitable standard. There is no doubt that the location and the facilities of the hotel are first class the rooms were comftable and kept very clean, but the service was dreadful and when you combine the both you can only give it a 2*. We have written to the hotel to complain but as we expected we have heard nothing.

As we were looking for an apartment in the Costa Callida region of Spain we had contacted Paradour Properties and this trip was financed and arranged by them in the main.
We were met at the airport and taken directly to our hotel Golf Campoamor.
Our room was very tastefull and immaculately clean, and the toiletries given in the ensuite bathrooms were the best I have ever been given during all my years of travelling.
The meals were excellent and we were taken out to various restaurants around the area in the evenings.
Twice we went to `Eduardos Restaurant` in the town where the food and service were exceptional.
The temperature was on average 28/31 and it was with a rude awakening we arrived back at Manchester to a temperature of 4 deg.
There was no `hard sell` and we saw a lot of the Costa Callida, Murcia area which we would have not have seen if we had been on our own.
It is a brillinat hotel for a golfing week end and I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
