“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

This was our second time to Sogndalstrand, and it was just as perfect as last time (4 years ago). Summertime makes the few narrow streets lively and the people who live there are very friendly, if you want to chat they will tell you a story or two! The old historic buildings are very well kept. There is also a few cozy shops with local products and art. We got the same room as last time (second floor in the Kommunehuset) facing the street. It's a suite/room with a large bedroom/living room, bathroom and a small kitchen. Clean, comfy and nice. The beds are really great and we had a good night sleep, even though the day temperature had been very high (30 C) and it was still warm late in the evening. There is no AC, but with the windows open the sea breeze kept the nightly temperature at a comfortable level inside the bedroom! It's a corner room with windows on two sides.
We had lunch in the garden outside the hotel. Just wonderful! Try the salmon sandwich or the fish soup. Yummy! We also had a bottle of chilled white wine and enjoyed our relaxing time just looking at the buildings around us and talking about the history of the place. We learned even more before dinner when one of the owners offered us and the other guests some champagne on the house, and told us about how it all started for her and her husband, and how the place had been way back. A great lady with lots of humor!
Afterward we had dinner in the restaurant and had a really good tasting experience, with local products and great service. The breakfast the next day was just as perfect. I only wished we could have stayed for an extra day, but we had to go on to reach our next goal further up the coast!

We stayed here last summer and it was fantastic. Superb location. A very warm welcome from Jan Odvar and Ele, a proper family run business. Fresh food, very high cleanliness and a superb ambience. I could not fault this hotel.

Room Tip: Every room is different, some right on the river but all quiet.

This hotel is a place for those who want a quiet time outside city life. Sogndalstrand is a small charming town that made me feel so secure I did not lock my doors during my stay. I went there last weekend as part of a team building exercise. My Norwegian is not fantastic and the lady in charge of the hotel was really nice about it. My room was nice, short ceiling (about 1.9m) but OK for me as I am not too tall, be sure to ask for higher ceilings if you are a tall person. Toilet was small but clean, they even provide a hairdryer! Breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant was great, night time activity will be drinking at their Prison Pub (they really call them that!). I was there during winter with just a one night stay, thus the lack of activities, during the summer there will be fishing, kayaking, cycling and even golf!

The only thing I can complain about is that they only provide me with a very thin pillow and I have bad neck...

Room Tip: Ask for rooms further from the pub if you think there will be people there late.

Calling this a hotel is not giving the place full credit for originality.

It is a small one-street place which used to be the harbour for Hauge community on the south coast of Norway. The "hotel" is a number of houses along the one street, with one of the houses serving as restaurant as well as reception.

The superior commander and I went there to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary. We had a house to ourselves, a few houses down from the reception. May is a bit before the season, so it was quiet, which suited us just fine.

The restaurant serves good food, from local sources whenever possible.

I have stayed it this hotel twice now, and it is a unique experience.

Sogndalstrand, the little one-street town right at the sea on the southwest corner of Norway, is incredibly cosy and charming now in the summer, with flowers all over and with a unique location along both sides of a strong current river heading into the Northern sea. The city was dead for close to around fifty years, and had been dead if it had not been for the founders of this hotel, bringing life and tourists to this little town.

The hotel is located in ten old historic buildings, dating back to I think around 1880. The rooms are individual, and all have their history - as have the individual buildings. The hotel, each house and each room, is decorated individually and are incredibly clean and cosy. Even as a conference center, this works very good. There are good conference facilities.

The kitchen serves great food with local ingredients - tonight we have had local hereford beef, clam shells as well as a creme brulle to die for. All coupled together with excellent tasting wines and local vegetables. The dinner and restaurant does not stand back for any European 5-star restaurant.

The service is also great. The people are truly proud of this place and feel it belongs to them.

For a special, historic visit into a town which is truly unique - visit this hotel. It is something very very special.

I went out to this part of south west Norway on a business trip. I found this hotel quite by accident on google streetview and so decided that this was a handy place to stay.

Sogndalstrand is a special place in Norway with a very narrow street and very little car traffic. All the buildings in the town are under strict preservation orders. Peace, quiet and harmony with nature is the theme for this location.

The hotel is spread out among several building in the village. My room was a typical double room size, overlooking the river. The room is decorated to a high traditional standard and included TV, wireless internet and a shower room. The bed was very comfortable.

The food served in the hotel restaurant is excellent, and despite staying there for a couple of weeks, I found that the menu options were sufficiently varied.

Above all, the thing I like about this hotel is the personal touch you get here. It's something missing from chain hotels, but not here. The staff are all very friendly and have going that extra mile to accomodate us our long stay. When we needed an early rise, then this opened for breakfast early. If we arrived late, there was always a meal for us. When laundry was needed, no problem!
