“Perfect Place for a Getaway”
Reviewed 16 August 2008

I booked a short, two day trip for myself and my three daughters, ages 5,7,& 11, for shopping and a day at Great America on the spurr of the moment on priceline (great rate with "name your own price") I even called back and asked them to extend my planned one night trip to two and they agreed at the same great price.

The hotel is very easy to find. We were able to walk to many resturants and the Gurnee Mills Outlet mall. It was only a 5 minute drive to Great America.

The hotel was perfectly cleaned, from the lobby to the pool, common areas and our room. We had a king bed with a pull out sofa bed. It was decorated nicely, and was plenty big for the four of us. The bathroom was newer and large enough to be comfortable in. Staff was very friendly and took care of our every need. Breakfast was hot and plenty to choose from. You cannot go wrong with this hotel. We'll come back again!

We stayed here using Marriott Reward points, 10,000 points got us one night with breakfast in an executive king suite. We needed a place to stay in the area and this looked like the least offensive for the price.
The hotel was easy to find using the directions on the hotel website, and we were able to check in at lunchtime. The room was large and included a pull out sofa, fridge and microwave. The tv also had a very large range of channels with excellent picture quality. The king bed was comfortable although the sofa bed wasn't (when are they?). The bathroom was also clean and in excellent condition, Pantene shampoo and conditioner was appreciated although they only provided a soap rather than a shower gel. The towels in the rooms were also tiny.
The pool area was empty when we arrived but was full when we returned at 6pm. It stayed busy until it closed at 12pm, amazingly mostly with small children. When the towel rack was empty we asked in reception and got clean ones. The pool was small and hard to really swim in (mainly because of the kids) and we didn't bother with the whirlpool. The water in the main pool was also absolutely freezing!
The hotel provides a free continental breakfast which included waffles, cereals, muffins, bagels, yoghurts, fruit etc. The room it is served in is probably more than adequate most mornings but on a Saturday morning during summer vacation it was rather full. The food was however fresh and plentiful and an assistant was on hand the whole time to ensure everything was stocked.
Overall we'd compare this hotel to being a tier down from Hilton's Homewood Suites, which isn't bad really for the price they are charging. The hotel is on the grounds of Gurnee Mills and almost adjacent to Six Flags so if you are a taking a family vacation here it would certainly be good value.
It's unlikely that we'll need to actually stay in this area again but we'd certainly stay here again if we needed to.

Decent locations, but Fairfield Inn is definitely one of Marriott's lower-tier properties. While Marriott tumpets its new, more comfortable bedding, Fairfield Inn still has the old acrylic bed covers that invariably slide off in the middle of the night. The window unit cooling/heating system was thumping like I don't know what, but it broke and quit running after a few hours, leaving the room rather stuffy. Do not ever accept Room 107 at this property. For the second time, I managed to land this room - it's next door to the pool (from where I could clearly hear 10-15 screaming kids playing in the pool) and directly across from the 'breakfast' room, which seems to be continually occupied by tour group members with a box or two of wine and having a great time amongst themselves while rattling the wall hangings in your room. I guess paying the higher government/official business rate doesn't rate a traveller any kind of better treatment. I asked the receptionist regarding the noise, and she said, "I'll just move you - get your (expletive)." I suspect Fairfield Inn is an independently owned hotel chain not directly under Marriott, and the inconsistent product quality from other equivalent Marriott brands, i.e., Towne Place Suites, is apparent. Both are two-star products, but the customer service quality and general condition of the properties is substantial. There is an abundant choice of reasonably priced hotels in the Gurnee-Waukegan area to choose from, and I urge vistitors to this area to consider hotel options other than the Gurnee Fairfield Inn when visiting this area.
