Best Western Plus Chicago Hillside
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Hillside

My dad and I travel to different cities to watch baseball games during the summer. Last summer we traveled to Chicago to watch the Whitesox. We selected the hotel based on affordability since downtown hotels were too expensive.

The hotel was fine. The bar and lounge was nice. The staff was helpful, they didn't seem overly excited to be there, but helpful. The only issue I had with the hotel was the smell of the garbage dump directly next to it.

The smell began penetrating our car as we pulled into the parking lot. I will never forget the sight of my dad running as fast as he could from the car to the back door of the hotel to get away from the stench. Once we were inside of our room we were O.K.

I would return to this hotel again, the area was safe, and it was located near the transit station. My dad probably wouldn't stay there again

First off, you need to know that this hotel sits immediately next to a landfill. Nothing like the continous wafting smell of decomposing garbage to wake you from your sleep, or to greet you in the morning while eating breakfast. Never have I had to hold my breath when entering or leaving a hotel. Absolutely disgusting.

Hotel staff were just o.k.; not overty friendly or outgoing. Seemed to be bothered at times they had to wait on guests, and seemed more interested in talking with other employees.

Shuttle service while free, was undependable. Took 45 minutes for a pick up from a location that was less than 5 minutes from the hotel (and this was at 9 p.m. mind you, so it wasn't rush hour or anything, and they have two shuttles they run.)

Breakfast buffet was lously and overpriced for runny eggs, mushy potatoes and warm milk.

Hotel room itself was standard Best Western; renovated recently? Hard to tell.

Do not stay in this hotel; do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to stay.

The staff was pleasant when checking us in. We requested a ground floor room. They were happy to do it, telling us that there were a few stairs. I appreciated that as stairs are difficult for me.
The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The shuttle took us to the airport on request instead of making us wait for the scheduled shuttle. The driver was very helpful in helping me into the van and telling us where they would pick us up.
On returning to Ohare airport I called the hotel and was told that the driver just left the airport and it might be an hour or more before they could return. They tried to call him back but he didn't answer. They then said they sent another driver and he would be there in a few minutes. He did arrive, stayed in the van and said "get in" . He told us that he "had to come after us because the other driver ignored the radio calls, it wasn't really his job". THEN he got a call while we were leaving the airport and circled around to pick ups two more guest. He again rolled down his window and said "well come on let's get going"
He called the hotel to say that he "got em all".
He was obviously mad that he had to come to get us. On the way back he pulled into a gas station obviously looking for someone then back on the road. He was rude! When we arrived at the hotel to pick up our car we went into the lobby to use the restroom before our two hour drive home. We heard him swearing and waving his arms complaining that he had to make the run to the airport. but it wasn't his job! For the first time in all my travels I refused to tip a driver.
Outside the hotel there was a faint odor from the landfill but inside it was fine. They had a nice lounge with pool table

We arrived a day early in Chicago, Il and the hotel we were staying at was booked for Labor Day weekend, so we found this hotel about 12 miles from Chicago downtown. This hotel was just renovated and the carpet was new and had a slight glue smell to be expected with new tile in the bathroom area.

The room itself was very clean and comfortable, we stayed in the double Queen bed room. If you like pillows you will enjoy the 4 pillows to a bed. We had a refrigerator and microwave that were both very clean. This hotel was located by a few restaurants in driving distance. We arrived in the evening and the area seem safe and quiet even though is was right next to the interstate. We would definately stay here again.

The hotel also had a restaurant onsite, but was closed around 10:00 PM so we did not get in there, they also have a bar that serves appetizers.

We chose this hotel to avoid the expense of a downtown Chicago hotel and enjoy some peace and quiet in the suburbs. The price was reasonable and it was convenient to get to the city, but doubt that I would stay here again - there were a few too many issues.
To begin, the hotel is located directly next to the Hillside landfill - guess that's the "hill" in "hillside". Attached is a photo of the view from our room - we directly overlooked the landfill. The smell was quite strong and not at all pleasant when we were outside, and prevented us from opening our window to enjoy the cool air. There were, however, signs on the landfill buildings saying that it would be closing Spring of 2008, but the smell will probably linger for quite some time. We also had a bank of stored tractor trailers parked right outside our window and we heard a loud clicking/hydraulic sound all day and night. We assumed it was a refrigerated trailer used for storage. We found out later that it was gas venting through PVC pipe from the landfill next door.

The window did open wide and did not have a screen in place - clearly a concern for a family with children. We were able to get a decent and reasonable hot meal when we arrived at 11:30 pm, but we had to walk down to the bar to order it and we waited at least 20 minutes just to place our order because they were so understaffed. The bartender did call us in our room to let us know when our food was ready to picked up, which was nice. (Delivery to the rooms stops at 11:00 pm)

We stayed 3 nights and the morning we were leaving, we noticed that among the number of tractor trailers stored on the back parking lot of the property one way in the back had a Radioactive warning placard on the back door. We did inform the manager, and my friend did contact the Illinois Division of Nuclear Safety who investigated and found that it was not Radioactive material stored by had just been placarded that way, probably in an attempt to keep people from trying to break into the trailer.

One of the important reasons I would not return here that the staff was not at all friendly. Not when we checked in, not when we called the front desk with questions, not when we ordered food and not when we checked out. No eye contact, no sincere greeting - just a feeling that we were interrupting their day.

There's also not a whole lot around the hotel to see or do. There are plenty of other hotels in different suburbs that are better situated and not next to a stinky landfill. All in all, not worth the time.

We have been travelling around the country for interviews this month. We booked this hotel at the last minute, as my boyfriend interviewed at Loyola for a position. First, the smell is still there, especially if you are outside of the hotel. The hotel staff was rude and unhelpful from the moment we got there. Told them we needed a shuttle the next morning and were told it would be no problem. Waited around for 45 minutes in the lobby ---while listening to the front desk person talk to friends on the phone the whole time---and the shuttle never came back, even though he had been saying for 30 minutes he was 2 minutes away. Finally, we decided to call a cab because he had to be there in 35 minutes and the manager happend to come out right then and offered to take us to Loyola. He was very apologetic and very helpful--kudos to him! No hot water the night before, and when I went to tell the front desk I was rudely told it would be back on soon. The hotel room was comfortable, and once inside we only noticed the smell when the wind blew a certain way.

The fun continues as the Hillside hotel proceeded to charge my credit card for the next 7 days and overdrafted my bank account the week of Christmas. There was some problem in accounting that nobody noticed that was charging people for every single day. I noticed it on day 4, but there were 3 more pending charges. Took days to get my money back and I was stuck in travelling with only a credit card.
