Great surroundings in the middle of the most beautiful area in the world. The design of the rooms is absolutely incredible. On site spa also good. The restraunt in the adjacent hotel was okay but after the rooms it seemed quite ordinary.

Room Tip: All different but all amazing

Such an amazing hotel in a glorious location. The room, food, staff, everything exceeded our expectations. Our host, Jenny, went our of her way to make sure our trip was perfect. Complete luxury! We'll be back.

Room Tip: The Duet Suite is perfect if you're planning a romantic getaway.

We stayed in the Spa Suite for 4 nights during half term. The interior is luxurious and modern in design. We were unsure of which room to take but thought we may as well go for the best and were not disappointed. The suite had a hall way which served little purpose, the bedroom and seating area were both large enough and comfortable. The real winner was the bathroom which was huge and the jacuzzi bath itself enormous. The jacuzzi jets had no power, we had two smaller baths at home which could create considerably more water turbulence. The size, however, meant we coud both comforatbly use it and with the bathroom folding door wide open listen to the brids or rain depending on which hour of the day. The shower room was ample in size with two rain showers and body jets so of course we had to shower together.
The balcony was large but the weather meant limited use although we were able to take breakfast on it.
There are a couple of moans about the staff but since they are the minority you can be sure they have to be from professional complainers who are probably unable to enjoy anything in life. The staff were fantastic. If there was anything we needed we knocked on their door or telephoned and someone appeared instantly with what we wanted. They were very helpful and friendly at all times. Well done to the staff for not letting passers by in for a nose thus protecting the privacy of the paying Brimstone guests - shame on that 1* reviewer.

The food/nibbles - we were happy with the food offering, the timing of the sandwiches was a bit hit and miss but if you can afford these rooms you can afford to eat out and not rely on freebies. I saw one guest take a large stack of sandwiches back to their room which contributed to them running out quickly, some people are just like that. If any drinks had run out we asked and they were replenished instantly. We didnt go to the hotel for breakfast but had it in the room, too much food if anything and the hot options were always delivered hot. we did eat in Wainwrights in the evening which we have done before and as ever the food is excellent. One night in Purdy's was good too.

We used the spa 3 times, not as tired as people suggest - get the timeing right though, if during school holidays you could have to queue to get in (only once), the rest of the time it was quiet.

Other guests were a 50/50 combination of people who are friendly or those who find themselves unable to respond if you say hello to them - probably the sort who are foot tapping and clock watching if they asked the staff for anything. Ignore anything less than 5* reviews - they are not justified. Overall a good stay - so quiet at night and such a comfortable bed.

We will return and probably take the spa suite again as I cant imagine how anything else compares.

Our thanks to Brimstone

Langdale is a short distance from Ambleside and the location for walking and pubs. We spent 2 nights at brimstone in a standard room which had the most enormous super king bed, a bath that I could completely lie down in and fantastic views of the woodland from the balcony, cool touches like the light fittings, never seen that before and the reading room with a selection of magazines and complimentary drinks including wine, g&ts, afternoon cakes and cheese in the evening it was perfect for relaxing. Only downside is that I felt I could wander around in my bathrobe because it felt so homely!

I cannot say enough about this wonderful place. We have just returned from Brimstone at Langdale and we feel slightly depressed about having to leave.

When we arrived we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who told us everything we needed to know about the hotel and showed us to our room. (Room 3 - Fireside suite). The room was out of this world and was definitely the highlight of our trip. The best bits of the room were the unbelievably huge and comfy bed, the amazing bath that is located in the bathroom and the wonderful wood burning fire. It was amazing to lay in bed in the morning, with the fire burning and a completely open view of the trees through the glass doors that lead onto the balcony. In the reading room, there is a constant supply of complimentary refreshments including wine, beer, ale, soft drinks, tea, coffee, sandwiches, scones, cakes and cheese and biscuits. It was all free!!! We sometimes felt like we were stealing or that we'd find out it was all added to our bill but it was completely complimentary. This was something that made it so special and we felt like we were being spoilt. This was added to the fact that breakfast was served in your room with no extra charge, something that I have paid for before in other hotels.

I can't say enough about Brimstone, it is a wonderful place that I think is in another league to any other hotel I have stayed in (and I'm quite partial to a luxury hotel).

It is pricey but if you enjoy luxury, then this is the place for you as I think it was worth it.
We really can't wait to go back!!!!!

Room Tip: Fireside suite!

We come to the Lake District a lot and have tried many different hotels, of varying standard. We've had the rough and the smooth so are well placed to honestly critique where we stay...

The Brimstone is a new purpose built luxury accommodation block within the long standing Langdale Estate. Whereas other parts of the estate are distinctly 70's, almost tatty, the Brimstone is luxurious and 5 star from the word go.

The entire building is beautifully decorated and appointed, with no expense spared on creating the best possible environment for guests. This extends through to the Reading room, where there are complimentary snacks served throughout the day.

We arrived at 1:50pm hoping our room would be ready...but it wasn't. No problem there, the check in time is stated as 3pm, and we can just enjoy a drink in the reading room. Staff mistake number 1 then occurred. We were told that our room would be ready by 3.00pm guaranteed....not only was it 3.15 before a room materialised, but numerous staff walked straight past us over that 1.5 hours and didn't speak to us once to update us.

Normally that 15 minutes wouldn't be a problem, but what made it worse was staff mistake number 2. in the 1.5 hours we sat waiting no fewer than 5 other guests were checked in - straight in, without having to wait. The staff, at this purportedly 5 star establishment, should have given the earlier arriving guest a ready room, thereby minimising their wait.

This was a theme that carried on the whole weekend, whilst the staff were very smiley and polite, they never once met a good standard of guest care, let alone an excellent one.

However when we got to our room we were blown away. We had one of the 'ordinary' rooms but WOW it was anything other than that. Beautiful high quality furnishings throughout, massive comfy bed, great rain shower, proper high definition big tv, our own balcony, nice big bath big enough to get two in, in comfort, it really was good. Nice gadgety lights with Sexy, Tinkle settings, partner particularly liked the GHD hair straighteners...we were seriously impressed.

We went over to the Spa, part of the Country club in part of the wider Langdale estate. This has recently had a refurb and is great, clean throughout, nice fresh pool, great big sauna with glass looking out over the pool area, and a really good steam room. It was all done very well, and the staff in the spa were excellent.

Then we went to the reading room for a few pre-dinner drinks and a relax after the swim. Our time in the room was ruined by the staff. at 5:50pm I asked when some snacks would arrive, to be told there would be sandwiches at 6:00pm. Fair enough. At 6:30 no sandwiches, and I was hungry...but it's not dinner time yet so we waited, assuming they would be along soon. At 7:00 no only were there still no sandwiches but staff kept continuously walking in and out of the Reading room without ONCE updating us.

It got Specifically, the girl that told us "...sandwiches at 6..." must have walked past us 15 or more times, every time smiling, and never ONCE helping. At 7:20 we gave up, however whilst we were getting changed for dinner I popped back now and then, as a I was starving....still no sandwiches.

The staff even found time to eat their own tea, without ever delivering any sandwiches for guests.

We went out for dinner (to the nearby Wainwrights pub which was excellent) ay 8:30 and still no sandwiches.

We came back at 10:30 after dinner and there was STILL no sandwiches. By this time it had become a complete joke, as there were other guests who had been after some sandwiches too.

Then the following morning there was no milk in the coffee machine....and no milk in the fridge....so no early morning coffee then. Again a girl appeared, and again she said she'd get some milk "...straight away..." which took 20 minutes to appear.

So in summary a visit of two tales, amazing accommodation but staff who are very clearly not trained or able to provide 3 star service, let alone 4 or 5 star. I cannot currently recommend this resort to anyone, due to the staff attitude.

Full disclosure: we have complained to the Resort Manager and, providing staff attitudes have changed considerably and they realise guests come first, we would be delighted to revisit - and re-review.

If you are going to this resort in the meantime I would seriously recommend phoning ahead, speak to the resort manager and explain you've read the bad reports of staff attitude, and outline your expectations.

Staff that promise the world and don't deliver anything are enough to put anyone off.

Room Tip: Bear in mind you get breakfast served in the room (as standard - what a treat!) so plan your Sunday...
