“Almost a ghost town”
Review of Long Grove

The recession appears to have taken its toll on Long Grove. This quaint litle town used to be bustling, but now it is becoming somewhat of a ghost town. Many of the smaller shops and restaurants have closed down over the last couple of years. Because Long Grove has lost much of their tourist trade most of the shops close at 5:00 pm. My wife and I came visited downtown Long Grove a few weeks ago on a Friday night and it was very boring with very few people in the restaurants and bars.

There is now a fee just to shop during Long Grove Apple Fest. The fee was $5.00 a person, and some lots are also charging a fee to park ranging from $5.00-$15.00. I had been attending the Fest for many years, and find this new fee unacceptable. Most of the main attraction stores have closed. So there are lots of empty stores. The main shopping is now replaced with more kid friendly activities. I guess that's what the fee is to promote. Since the main reason for all the stores is to shop, and the stores have mostly closed, I find no reason really to return there. The Confectionary, Mangels, and The Christmas Store, as well as Within Reach are still there, and offer good shopping. But that's not enough reason for me to make the extended drive, and have to pay just for the privilege of spending money in their stores.

Many of the shops are gone. Used to be such a fun place to go and explore. Of the few stores that are still open, people were very pleasant. Not much fun anymore.

We live in Illinois and stopped here recently after years of seeing the tollway exit for "Historic Long Grove" and occassionaly articles touting the town in newspapers. As a former New Englander, I don't see this village as being very historic. There are a couple of nice shops and a fair restaurant. But don't venture too far from your path to walk this Grove.

We haven't been here for a few years, but were in the area last week so we stopped by. We were very saddened to see that the apple haus had closed as with some of the other shops. But everyplace we did go to, the confectionary for chocolate covered strawberries, the popcorn shop for fudge and the bakery, we were welcomed by very friendly and helpful staff. The treats were delicious too.
