“Excellent!”
Reviewed 25 July 2013

My wife and I stayed one night recently. Like most other reviewers everything was great - room clean and well furnished, public areas clean and in perfect condition, excellent breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage (links and patty), and biscuits and gravey plus the normal breads, cereals, etc.

Just to add a bit of a different perspective: There are three things that often differentiate one mid-class hotel from another (after the basics have been met). First an age old problem - why are the bathrooms not adequately vented to prevent condensation on the mirror? Most hotels suffer from this problem. In this hotel there was pretty good ventilation - only 25% of the mirror got fogged. So passing grade of B-.

Second, many hotels in this range have a sofa and/or easy chair, then do not provide a light or table adjacent. This Holiday Inn was different - there was an end table and floor lamp by the easy chair, and an end table by the sofa. Why there was not a lamp on this table is unknown. There was a lamp on the table in the living area that I moved to the table but it would have been nice to have a lamp already there.

Third - since these are "self service" hotels I expect there to be sufficient luggage carts of good quality construction. Here there were three heavy duty luggage carts that seemed to be sufficient for the hotel as there were always at least 2 in the reception area.

It is not usual for me not to find something I didn't like but I believe this hotel met and exceeded my requirements.

Oh wait a minute, I forgot: there was no pen in the room!

One tip: If you are using a Garmin, check the address that it has for the Holiday Inn. Ours directed us to the old location (new location opened in May 2012); the desk clerk said that this happens often.

My wife and I definitely recommend this hotel if you are in Marion.

This is a new hotel and is very clean, neat and well kept. Staff is very cordial and the overall experience was good HOWEVER,............they advertise breakfast beginning at 6:30 AM, and nothing was ready then, there was not even coffee (the containers were empty), and at 10 of 7AM the person was still trying to prepare the food to serve. WE ended up leaving without the promised "hot breakfast".
The only other item that could be improved is that the refrigerator in the room was very tiny and for people traveling like us it would have been nice to be able to put our supplies in it and not using ice in our cooler.
All and all it is quite a nice hotel and I would recommend it.

This Holiday Inn Express is new and a much improved version of the older "models'. Very nice furnishings, windows that cracked open (with a screen) for fresh air, wall mounted thermostat that made controlling the AC very easy and kept a good steady temp (unlike the systems that Hamptons have installed that seem to provide very uneven heating and cooling), the triple sheeted HIE bedding that we like a lot as can cover up reused blanket (altho still like the completely fresh each time Hampton duvets even more!), better than usual breakfast with way more decent tasting and hot food than one normally finds at these type of breakfasts (even scrambled eggs that were fresh, moist, and not glopped together like what one normally gets at such buffets) and very carefully kept warm and replenished and clean by the great breakfast staff. In fact, we found ALL the staff very friendly and efficient. The front desk folks were welcoming and had us preslotted into a room of the type and on the first floor where we requested. Housekeeping was friendly and accommodating and everything was clean and tidy. The location is the best that it can be at this busy intersection with easy access on and off the interstate, but far enough back to protect against some of the road noise. A small bonus that we experienced is that it is right next to a minor league ball park where the "Miners" play and where they have nice fireworks for 20 minutes or so starting about 15 minutes after the games when a home game is on Friday evenings. We were able to sit on the nice motel patio, as we were there on a Friday night, and view them in comfort on a lovely evening. The ball field also was just far enough away so as to not be heard inside the motel, even though the game seemed well attended, so it was the best of both worlds-fireworks without disturbing noise. The only thing that I can see that this motel is lacking is a hot tub, but the pool seemed nice altho we did not use it and also, it would be nice if the small frig (that appear to be in every room, along with small microwaves, unlike most HIEs -so a definite plus) would have a small freezer compartment for "blue ice" cooler blocks. The many, many pluses FAR outweigh those 2 small minuses, however. I would highly recommend this great property! We certainly plan to stay there again when in the area.

Located just off the I-57 freeway at exit 34 in Marion, the last major city in Illinois as one heads south (or the first if going towards Chicago and points north), the relatively new Holiday Inn Express is simply a superb place to spend a night or two. My wife and I try, whenever we can, to stop at HIEs along the way, but even as Platnium Club members, we were simply amazed at how very, very nice this particular establishment was. It is, indeed, hard to know what to praise the most. The rooms are ultra-comfortable, the bathtubs are large (something that is becoming less and less evident in other hotel/motels as developers try to cut costs), the breakfast room nice and the food even better. The motel is pristine, there was a very useful business center (though the desk space in the rooms was large and well-thought-out), elevators are quick and smooth, the wi-fi is seamless (though a little bulky to load initially). As others have also noted, the staff is it wonderful. The young folks at the reception desk were bubblingly friendly always asking what they could do to make our stay more comfortable. The breakfast room manager was pleasant and very efficient and even the cleaning staff never failed to say hello and ask about us.

The HIE Is located with very easy on and off access to the interstate, there are numerous restaurants within a few blocks, the local mall, though somewhat dying, is less than a mile or so down the same street, and for those that care, the hotel is located directly next to the large parking lot of the local minor league Southern Illinois Miners' stadium and it is vety easy to walk to see a game when the team is in town.

Only one quibble: the very convenient fridges that every room does have do not have built-in freezers which, for travelers like us who carry coolers and ice blocks to keep everything cool, a tiny "negative." If they are ever replaced -- and we hope the company will do so sooner than later -- staying at the HIE would be worth 6 or 7 stars.

I wish other cities, at least those we visit with some regularity, had such a nice place as the HIE in Marion. I think we'd we travel more just to have the pleasure of staying at hem.

My family and I stayed at the new HIE over the 4th of July weekend and found the new location and property to be a nice improvement over the old property located down the road. Although the hotel has been in its current location for over a year, it's been more than that since we had occasion to visit family who live in the area, so we were surprised to find out the HIE had moved north off I 55 a few blocks, closer to the ballpark, Miners Field. The new building is larger and the location provides a quieter stay since its a bit furthers away from the noise of the freeway. Those who've stayed at the old location will also be glad to find that there's no glaring light from lamps that illuminate the parking lots and no annoying truck noise either that use to be one of the downsides to staying at the old location.

The furnishings in the rooms been updated: better beds, bathroom amenities, and desk situation. Still, the colors chosen by the HIE decorators suggest that the corporation thinks the majority of their guests are men. They're all black and other dark shades accented with deep reds. Those are not colors that speak to women. A more neutral palette would be more inviting, more welcoming to all. The black and red give off a 70s-era, bad porno movie vibe. (Yikes,)

Breakfast has also been improved. You can now spread real butter on your toast, bagel, English muffin, mor cinnamon roll ands the fruit selection is somewhat wider than before. The pancake machine was a hit with many of the kids who were there during our stay, mail though my husband , a real affecianado of this classic breakfast dish, mound them rather tough.

One of the best things about this HIE has always been its staff. They're typical Midwesterners: warm, friendly, and always willing to help if they can. For instance, none morning, as my sister and I were eating breakfast, another guest asked Tristan, the breakfast server, if there was ice available in the breakfast area. Tristan said, "No, but if would be nice if we had ice down here." The woman guest asked, "where is the nearest ice machine?" Tristan told her it was one floor up. The woman must've found that too far to go. (This is what's wring with America: there was an elevator not three steps away!). Next thing you know, mere comes Tristan with a pitcher of ice. She'd gone unto the second floor and gotten ice for the woman and done so without being asked to do so. Another example: I left two small medications in my room at checkout. I called when I realized I was missing them, maybe two hours after we left. Christie, the front desk clerk, located them, called to let me know she and housekeeping had done so, then she mailed them to my home. Applause for excellent customer service!

All in all, the HIE is THE place to stay in the Marion area. It's not the Fairmont or the Omni, two of my favorite chains, but it's even better in some ways. The friendliness of its staff is more genuine than at upscale chains and you still get a fairly comparable nights sleep.

I stayed here in May and back in January. There was a snow storm coming when I was there in January, the staff looked up the weather for me. Front desk was extremely nice, the rooms were very clean, and o found the property to be quite. Plus the parking lot is well lit, which is a must! Will stay again when traveling through!

Our stay here was awesome. Got in late with the family and was greeted with waters and snacks at the front desk as I am a gold member. Super friendly staff and very professional. The breakfast ran late and was amazing. The rooms actually were pretty classy and quite roomy. I highly recommend this hotel.
