“A taste of nature that is just what is needed for a relaxing weekend get-away”
Reviewed 22 March 2009

We stayed at the White Pines Inn this month; it was our second visit. We live only about two hours away; it is a great get-away without having to drive hours and hours. There are about 24 cabins, including a few "quad" cabins. This is a great place to take some nice hikes and enjoy relaxing, family time. There is a gas fireplace in the cabin, and while it is "cozy," it is nice for a short get-away. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The kids love the gift shop, and the restaurant is nice and food is quite good (make a reservation as is small.) Bring some marshmallows as there are firepits to use...and bring the frisbee! Highly recommend.

Two cons, that perhaps the Inn can improve upon in future:

The kids play equipment is antiquated (to put it mildly.) Would be nice to have some new playground equipment as families with toddlers/younger kids may not be able to enjoy the trails as much...newer equipment in the area in front of the Inn would be an asset.

It would be nice if the small side table in the room were replaced (not the larger table, which is good for games) with a comfy chair. If someone wants to stay up and read, the bed or the hard chair is only option.

My wife and I have enjoyed many of the other State Resorts in Illinois and thought it was high time to visit White Pines Inn. Some friends had recommended it and it proved to be worth the trip.

We stayed in one of the rustic pioneer cabins (#4) for one night during Mid-March. Mother nature kept things cool during our visit, but our cabin stayed nice and cozy.

We found everything charming and the food in the restaurant was outstanding. Though the restaurant/dining room is small (15 tables) they also have a larger room in the back used for Dinner Theater. We missed the show, but talked to a few other guests who said it was a lot of fun. I checked into it and found out they have packages that include tickets to the show, dinner, and breakfast.

Pros:
- Very quiet and peaceful - perfect for a romantic getaway
- DVD/VCR option in cabins is nice to have
- Loved the ambience and charm of the place
- The cabin journal - left behind for each party to share their impressions of the place - was neat. We enjoyed seeing some of the entries. One person showed us how to spot an "angel" in the pattern of the rocks in the fireplace.
- Great food
- Nice variety of trails

Cons:
- Small bathroom shower
- We had some ladybugs sharing our cabin with us (we get them at home too)
- No "resort" style activities - this is a place to go and relax
- No couch/comfy chair in cabin to use when watching tv - the bed and two small wooden chairs are it

I'd recommend visiting this quaint little jewel in northern Illinois. We found the staff friendly and knowledgeable about the park.

If going with more than two people, consider asking for one of their "quad" cabins. These units are four separate rooms joined together than can be rented as individuals, pairs, etc to accomodate the size of your party.

You may also want to bring some folding lawn chairs to use by the big firepit at night. Looked like a fun place to sit and roast marshmallows. (unfortunately, the fireplaces are gas log and you are unable to cook s'mores inside).

  • Liked — Really great location for a romantic getaway or a quiet retreat from the hectic day-to-day.
  • Disliked — Trails were more rugged or narrow in some spots than we'd anticipated.

I am the same person who wrote the previous review, but must let you know that some changes for the better have occurred in the cabins. This year my friend and I took her 3 year old twin granddaughters during the weekend of March 9-11. Upon entering the cabin, we noticed a change that really pleased us, especially the children. There was a new t.v. and also a DVD player. The t.v. this year received 4 channels, but we didn't use it much, since we brought DVD's for the car ride for the girls. The room was very clean, with a fireplace, trundle bed, small table with two chairs, bathroom with shower, and a mini-fridge. The heat in the unit worked very well, but wasn't really needed when the fireplace was on. When asked their opinion of this vacation, one girl said "Yeah!', while the other said, "You look for pennies here!" (pennies and other small coins are hidden by previous guests, which gave the children a game to play while in the cabin) We hiked on the trails, and found deer and squirrel tracks in the snow.
On Friday night, we ate dinner in the restaurant since it was very foggy and we didn't want to venture out on the roads. The food for the children was a little pricey, while the adult food was about average priced. We all enjoyed the food and atmospehere. On Sunday, we ate at the breatkast buffet. The girls were free, and the price was reasonable. The buffet held eggs, waffles, french toast, pancakes, bacon, ham, sausage, various sweet rolls and cakes, fruit, and much more.
We had another great experience this year, and have already made our reservations for next year.
