“Quality in Zagori”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

We just returned home from our trip to Ano Pedina - Zagori and we already miss our stay there. First impression: the resort is very well aesthetically balanced: traditional externally with very modern interiors. The next impression is the professionalism of the staff and the owner himself who are always there looking after the guests. The breakfast is superb and as a Greek myself, I was excited to finally see a Greek hotel offering a delicious gourmet breakfast based solely on local products. The same applies for the restaurant as well: the (delicious) cuisine is modernized Greek based on Greek products and we have to point out the fact that the wines served are very reasonably priced.
Finally, one word for Zagori in general and Ano Pedina in particular: Zagori is not a place to look for night life. It is a place of romance, fresh air, nature, architecture, long walks, nice cuisine and relaxing. All the villages are beautiful, each has its own beauty. One of the main beauties of Ano Pedina is Monopatia resort.

A friend talked to me about this resort in the outmost north-eastern part of Greece in the wild area of Zagoria and in the village of Ano Pedina. The comound is composed by houses newly renovated with loads of good taste, very elegant contemporary decoration. We had a suite with a fireplace, two bathrooms, and beds made by the famous Cocomat. It is wonderful to see the craftsmanship that has gone into the rebuilding of the houses. An act of love, what Greeks also call "meraki", has made the dream of of the hotel's director, a reality. He actually grew up in one of the restored houses and knows the area by heart. He goes to the woods almost daily to bring back fresh truffle and other local produce. The chef prepares them into delicious, light dishes. I live in Paris and yet, I have rarely eaten as well anywhere else. And frankly, the price/quality ratio is also superb! The staff is very friendly and helpful, ready to organize all kinds of hiking trips for you, guide you in the discovery of the area surrounded by unspoiled mountains, a river with pristine waters, really incredibly clear waters, and lots of wildlife. If you like hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, discovering an unspoiled area far away from the tourist traps while staying in a wonderful resort, THIS IS THE PLACE! We've loved it and plan to return.

My experience wasn't good at all. This hotel is the worst place to choose if you want to travel to Zagori.
We found it by chance and took an offer long time before our visit. Unfortunately, it was not the ideal to choose, as an area and as a hotel.
The village ''Pedina'' has not the beauty of the other Zagori villages. We didn't like it at all. The landscape is boring and very drowny, in the middle of nowhere. No forest, river, gorge and mountain scenery...
The hotel is advertized as a unique resort but we didn't find something special in it. As a design and as services. It was like retirement place for old people.
We didn't eat at the hotel's restaurant because we found it very expensive. In the nearby villages you can find very nice small traditional restaurants like in Vitsa , or Papigo which is the most picturesque of all the villages, also Vikos and Monodentri worth a visit too, with nice view...
If we visit the area again we definately choose those places, and for sure not monopatia resort, it is not good value for money at all.

My husband and I spent 5 days at this lovely property. Basically, it is a series of renovated mansions and out buildings from the turn of the century. If this sounds rustic, it wasn't. The interiors are ultra designed -- very modern, with beautiful fabrics, a huge bathroom (plenty of hot water) and a working fireplace. We did excursions, such as rafting and hiking (don't skip the Vikos gorge, the deepest in the world). The staff made all the arrangements and were great about it.

The restaurant was amazing. The chef was excellent. Most of the ingredients were local. We are talking fresh morels and truffles, if you can believe it. I gained three pounds. The wines, which I had never heard of before, were delicious. We took back some labels, but we can't find them here at home :(

We found this hotel pretty much by chance -- it is new. We saw other properties, and they were no where near as nice. Another shout out for the service, which isn't always so great in Greece. This hotel is up to international standards of luxury. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in cottage number 5, stay there.
