Zavora Lodge
Reviewed 25 December 2012

The location of this resort is beautiful, the beach stretches for ever and there are reefs and spots that based on the tides offer interesting sights. The sand is soft and white and the water warm and very clean. The area infront of the resort has a few 4x4's that park on the beach and set up there canopies etc, but the mood is relaxed and very peaceful. Quite a bit of launching going on which I didn't like as its by the reef and limits the swimming but you can easily move to another spot. No beach vendors to bother you and the resort has a small convenience store for essentials. The restaurant has a beautiful view.....but unfortunately the food Is quite average....maybe less. We had lunch on three separate occasions and if the sea and holiday appetite was not so strong i would have waited,It's the perfect place to have a few drinks and take in the view, the service is not the best but the staff do try very hard, there is just not enough of them. What was shocking was the lodge staff, the receptionist didn't know anything about anything...literally and the management walked around looking at the guests standing around without offering assistance. I have travelled extensively and I understand that you get different service levels based on where you are in the world but this is quite disappointing. Even in saying this its worth coming here. You can spend the day swimming and then have a few drinks while taking in the views. Maybe pack a few sandwiches with. They do have a great reed bar right on beach and if you want to have a few drinks and chill.....this is where it's going to happen.

Room Tip: The rooms didn't look good and the comments from others were not very encouraging.....I would no...

We read an article about Zavora Lodge in the Divestyle Magazine (South African Issue) before travelling to Mozambique for a scuba diving holiday. We were intrigued and to cure our curiosity we visited the Lodge on our travels. Zavora Lodge met the scuba criteria well above average, but the accommodation was a shock!

The sea-facing houses (overpriced) that we stayed in was literally falling apart and our neighbours were fisherman who were skinning and gutting their fish on our "communal" patio. We barely slept that evening as we had to close the windows to avoid the smoke of the neighbours' barbecue to enter our house (badly planned location for a barbecue area). We then got moved to 1 of 2 newly built houses (also sea-view) next to the dive-centre/restaurant/reception. The house was lovely, clean and quaint, but unfortunately the traffic was non-stop with no privacy and the generator was situated next to us... Anyhow, we left feeling everything but relaxed and renewed.

Our recommendation is that you can dive Zavora, but not stay there! There are other Lodges and Resorts in the area if it is the diving you are after.
