“Nice cathedral, but completely run-down”
Reviewed 6 March 2012

The cathedral looks quite nice, but is not operated as a tourist attraction at all. In fact when we were there it looked like it was being used as a school. It clearly hasn't been properly maintained for a few decades and is simply run-down and in desperate need of some restoration. The place was abandoned when we arrived, but we managed to find a cleaner who opened the clock tower for us. I climbed to the top, despite heavy protests from the cleaner and others in our party over the safety (the steel ladders leading up were rusty, but I made sure every step was solid before continuing). From the top, you do get a nice view, but it is a rather scary climb.

“One of Africa's Oldest Churches”
Reviewed 2 October 2011

Inhambane is one of Southern Africa's most pleasant towns. Surrounded by a beautiful bay which is home to everything from Arab-style dhows to grazing dugongs, it has a magnificent location, with many fine beaches nearby. It also has a small but interesting old town, with some old Portuguese-era villas and a 19th century mosque. The most impressive single monument, however, is the city's 18th century cathedral- one of the oldest European churches south of the Zambezi. It lost of its pews in the civil war, but this time-worn old church is worth a visit.
