“A Most Wonderful B&B”
Reviewed 17 July 2009

Found this B&B whilst searching the internet and checking reviews on this site. Full payment is requested on arrival but then this is to be expected, as it would be easy for someone to leave without paying otherwise, as each room has its own private entrance and key. We stayed in the Garden Room which was very clean and very tastefully decorated. There was a lovely conservatory attached to the bedroom with two chairs and a coffee table with plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits and magazines detailing places to visit. There was the lovely extra little touch of a little tray of wine glasses and corkscrew. The bathroom was also decorated to a high standard with lovely toiletries. Outside of our room, in the garden, was also a little ornate table and chairs for our own use.

The breakfast choice (chosen the day before) was extensive and ready for us when we got to our table (shown to us the day before, when we arrived) at 8.30am, which is the set time for breakfast. The table was layed out with a gorgous flower pattern bone china tea set and matching plates, with quiet classical music playing in the background, which made for a very relaxing breakfast. Added to this was the lovely view out of the dining room window. The full english breakfast was enormous and very hot, with a choice of brown or white toast. Elaine and William were very friendly and courteous and were happy to give recommendations of places to visit and Elaine even wrote down directions for us to drive to the wonderful Chatsworth House via a scenic route.

There are the 2 pubs and a restaurant that you can walk to but they do get booked up very quickly, so it is best to go early or book if possible.

We will definitely be returning to Choir Cottage again and recommending this B&B to our friends and relations. This really is a little gem of a B&B.

Thank you Elaine and William for a very pleasant stay.

My partner and I found Choir Cottage through an on-line search engine. What a lucky search that turned out to be! William and Elaine were perfect hosts, welcoming and friendly.

The facilities were immaculate - we had our own comfortable sitting room, and even our own front door! Choir Cottage is an amazingly good mix of the best of bed & breakfast accommodation, combined with the privacy of a beautiful, quaint, peaceful, homely holiday let. Fresh, clean towels and toiletries were provided each morning, and the beautifully carved four poster bed was supremely comfortable.

Nothing is too much trouble for these people, and the calm and relaxing atmosphere in the cottage extended into the dining room. Breakfast orders were taken on arrival, and the selection would rival any hotel. The food was piping hot, perfectly presented, and plentiful. Hot tea and toast were brought to the table exactly when you wanted it - and exactly as you like it.

The owners' local knowledge is excellent, and each morning brought a quick review of the local weather forcast, along with recommendations for how to spend the day. A comprehensive list of local eateries, along with contact details, was provided on booking, but was also repeated in the room, so dining in the evening was a pleasure. A range of tourist literature was also provided in the sitting room.

What we didn't tell William and Elaine until the morning we left was that we'd had a stressful few months, with major illness and a very close family bereavement, and desperately needed some 'us' time. The Pine Room at Choir Cottage provided exactly that. With the champage and roses which had been provided at my partner's request, it also turned out to be the perfect venue for a very special marriage proposal - we plan to return after our wedding later this year!

Our little secret

This is our second stay at choir cottage, just like a first viewing on a property you get over whelmed, and shout and shriek from the roof tops how nice the place is, how romantic and homely, so on our second visit I was expecting disappointment; how wrong was I ,This place to us feels like a second home, that you want to just keep coming back to time and time again. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, the breakfast is first class on par or better than some four star hotels.

So if you’re holidaying or visiting within 40 miles of choir cottage it’s unquestionably worth the added journey just to stopping over

We had a lovely stay at Choir Cottage, we had stayed the previous night at a really grotty cheap hotel and this was such a difference. We particularly liked the fact that it was a private 1/2 a cottage and that the children had their own spaces, which meant we didn't all have to go to bed at 8! Breakfast was delicious and there were some lovely touches like a corkscrew and wine glasses in the room. The bed was comfortable, bedlinen white and good quality and it was all really well done and thought out. William and Elaine were friendly and helpful.

This was great for a relaxing weekend away and the rooms are amazing. we stayed in the Pine Room, which is really your own half of a cottage rather than a room- there's a small sitting room (and childs bedroom) downstairs.upstairs has a bathroom and a great master bedroom with four poster bed and flatscreen tv on the wall. its very private so ideal for romantic breaks. the breakfast was in the main building and was very good, everything is waiting for you when you come down and the breakfast only takes a few minutes and is delicious. the owners are very friendly (and organised!) . there's lots to do nearby, ate at The Boat (pub by the canal), good food for 6 or £7 and Castros, which is a little pricey but excellent food. stoke on trent is about 20 mins drive away, lots to do there. had a great weekend, miles better than staying in a hotel

Stayed here for a couple of nights in October, couldn't fault the place for cleanliness, looked lovely and very well maintained.

Maybe it's common practice for B&B's but didn't expect to have to pay in full up front for the entire stay on arrival so be warned about that and no credit cards are accepted. Also having to quickly figure out what you want for breakfast the night before on arrival surprised as well.

Overall breakfast was fine, no extras though, didn't come with toast, tea, juice, etc, you had to specify those but if you asked for them they readily obliged but found it a little different to have to ask for things generally considered a given.
