“Very good hotel in beautiful grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2010

Thoroughly enjoyed my 3 night stay here amongst willing and helpful staff. The grounds are a delight and very comfortable room once I got used to walking at an angle to get to it, as the upstairs coach house rooms have corridors with sloping roof. Although a smallish room it was very comfortable and a bigger bed than I was expecting from some of the other reviews on this site. Good breakfast included and suffice to say I will definitely stay here again when next around the Guildford area. Some lovely little touches like bottles of water, fruit and biscuits to take with you on your journey when you leave and lots of maps of the grounds and surrounding area. Only slight negative was the hot room - even on overcast evenings the room was hot, so I had my table fan (provided) on all night, and judging by the number of open windows others found the same. But minor, really minor, I mention it for completeness.

Thank you for your positive comments following your stay at Barnett Hill earlier this year. I was pleased to note that you found your accommodation comfortable despite the quirkiness of the access corridor in the eaves of the Courtyard. I apologise if the heat in your bedroom caused you any discomfort and we will certainly bear this in mind with future refurbishment projects to see if air conditioning can be introduced into the rooms which, can be a challenge in a listed building but certainly worth consideration.

Stayed overnight for a wine tasting experience which was great fun. However, the room we were allocated was in the courtyard building and totally inadequate for two people. We asked to be moved but were told that the hotel was full and that there was no alternative other than single rooms. I would class our room as a single as the bed was only a 4ft and pushed into a corner behind the door with a sloping ceiling at the foot end. This meant no bedside cabinet or light and no way in or out of bed for the person beside the wall without getting the other to get out completely. The dinner was uninteresting and tasteless but the breakfast was much better. It was such a shame as the building and grounds are beautiful and, talking to other guests, not all the rooms were like ours. Advice, if staying at this hotel, phone and request a decent size room and bed in advance..

Thank you for your constructive feedback following your stay with us whilst attending a Red Letter Days wine tasting event. I was sorry to read that your acccommodation failed to meet with your expectations and have noted your concerns regarding the size and layout of the bedroom in particular which will be very useful to us when prioritising future refurbishment plans for our Courtyard bedrooms. I was also disappointed to note that you did not enjoy the evening meal provided following the wine tasting event and as a result of this we have reviewed the menu content for future similar events due to take place. Since it is never our intention to have guests leave Barnett Hill feeling anything other than completely satisfied we have subsequently sent you a 'Sundial cheque' entitling you to a complimentary night's stay including dinner and breakfast which we sincerely hope you will be able to use at some point in the future allowing us a further opportunity to demonstrate to you our usually high standards of accommodation, food and hospitaity

I stayed over night while attending a wedding. The room was a single occupancy room at the back of the hotel facing onto a garden and car park. It was a decent size for one person, had good tea and coffee facilities, good TV and an ipod docking station which was fab! Good sized and nicely styled bathroom en suite, clean and tidy. For the convenience of staying over after the wedding this was ideal. Buffet breakfast very nice in the morning - all in, quite a nice place to stay and great grounds and facilities for weddings ... One thing that was slightly annoying, as the room wasn't huge, the radiator from the en suite tended to heat the entire room which made the room pretty hot .. but not a big deal all in all - Staff were helpful and I was able to check in earlier than I had thought would be possible which was a great bonus - Good place to stay!

We had a weekend break here. We have travelled widely over the years sometimes in very expensive hotels so have lots of hotel experiences and we always travel to new places full of anticipation. Satnav took us to the door and we experienced from the start a level of service other places can only aspire to. Room (18 ) was pretty good - maybe a bathroom upgrade in due course - but everything worked - free water available - bed large and comfortable. There was a small conference on - 18 people - but they were very quiet and friendly - adding to the Country House atmosphere. Booked dinner in the Oak Room - real fire - fabulous service ( Justina and Anita ) and found food absolutely brilliant. No probs with wine by the glass - we were so well looked after each night - happy to supply food not on the menu as my wife has restricted tastes. When we arrived back on the Sat evening Anita saw us pull up and quickly left the bar to came to open the front door for us ! All the staff were chatty but nicely unobtrusive. No chance to walk the grounds - weather not too good - but the place is impressive. I've been on hundreds of conferences over the years but never anywhere as nice as this. For weekend breaks - marvellous too !! Well done to all the staff - you made us feel so welcome.

My husband and I stayed at Barnett Hill for a Red Letter Days one night wine tasting break we received as a wedding gift.

We had a nice break overall. The hotel is in a pretty area and we went for a nice walk on the grounds the next day. We just had a few criticisms. Our room was very small and stuffy. The bed was a ¾ bed, not really enough room for both of us to fit comfortably. Also, the food was ok, but not great.

Although we had an enjoyable night, I would not be in a rush to return to Barnett Hill.

Thank you for your constructive feedback following your stay at Barnett Hill whilst attending a Red Letter Days wine tasting event. I am sorry that we failed to meet entirely with your expectaions on this occasion in respect of the allocation of your bedroom and the evening meal provided. Since it is never our intention to have guests leave Barnett Hill feeling anything other than completely satisfied, we take all forms of feedback very seriously indeed and your comments will certainly be of use to us when considering future refurbishment proposals for some of our bedrooms and in revising menus for future Red Letter Day events

We stayed here two nights for a wedding. I knew it was a conference centre and didn't have a pool so I was not overly enthusiastic at the thought of staying.

On arrival I thought it was beautiful. It is a listed building and is carefully preserved. I am not much of a one for architecture and couldn't tell you what style it is, but it is beautiful. The rooms are all different, some quite large and airy and some quite small. It is a bit of a lottery I suppose. Our room was a corner room and I thoroughly recommend asking for a corner room if you are going to stay.

I would imagine it to be a bit busy during the week and there are internet terminals and indeed everything you would need for business placed around the hotel. There are also tables with water, fresh fruit and biscuits that can be accessed any time of the night or day.

The hotel was really hot. There is no double glazing so they keep the heat right up. We had to sleep with our windows open. The bed was a bit small, which was a shame, but it didn't stop me getting a good nights sleep.

The food was very nice. Nothing terribly fancy, but plentiful and wholesome. They need to work on their vegetarian awareness as despite having won a vegetarian award, they served up meat and non meat sandwiches on the same plate.

The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Guildford town centre and easily accessible for shopping.

I am definitely going to stay again. I think a shopping weekend would be in order. I am not sure that I would stay during the week because of the conference traffic.

A little difficult to find, old style understated elegance, a lovely place for a break.
