“Food fit for a king!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014 via mobile

Wow. We arrived at King John amidst glorious sunshine, in a beautiful setting with a wonderfully warm welcome. Booked in for one night only, we came to King John for food, as our final evening treat of a west England and Wales holiday jaunt. It was only when we sat down for a drink did we check out some reviews of the place (we chose it through its location and ranking in the Independent's top 100 UK gastro pubs) and we were surprised with some of the negative reviews, albeit we hadn't eaten yet. For food, this is a must. I had the oysters to start while my husband opted for the shellfish chowder - both wonderful.

We opted for the twice baked cheese soufflé and veal chop mains - the meat was thick and succulent, the cheese was divine. We couldn't resist the apple doughnuts served with toffee sauce and mulled cider and, I have to day, it is one of the best desserts I've ever had. King John isn't cheap bit it's worth it. Beautifully presented and tasty food that goes above and beyond and the service was delightful. We're now relaxing in our room (really lovely) for the evening, nicely stuffed whilst finishing off a great (and well-priced) bottle of Chateau neuf du pape. Can't wait to return.

We had a lovely two-nights stay, and enjoyed the young, cheerful staff. A relaxed atmosphere both in the restaurant and outside, but with chatter and other noise inside it is very difficult to hear yourself think, so we ended up having our meals outside. The rooms are of a reasonable size, and we had the biggest king size bed we had anywhere this summer in room 5. Other rooms couldn't offer such extravagance. The village is very pretty, but really small with no amenities. When it comes to contact with rest of the world the village is a complete black hole, no mobile cover, so you are wholly dependent upon the wifi service at the hotel.

The King John Inn is lovely - a beautiful building, great decor, lovely garden and rooms. The bathrooms are lovely and the showers were amazing. The boys behind the bar are great; helpful and friendly, and also our waitress at breakfast. The food is very good, breakfast lunch and barbecue, but very overpriced. The housekeeper is miserable and the staff are all obviously afraid of her. She made me feel like we were being a nuisance every time we interacted with her. Very disappointing considering my party booked out all the rooms for two nights. Also, if you want a late drink, you need to supply your own - no 24hr service/licence or room bar here.
This is definitely a game of two halves - when it's good it's great, but when it's bad it's bad.

Dear Customer,
We do always appreciate feedback from our customers. We are delighted you enjoyed your meals here and that you loved the food. The rest of the staff also really appreciate your compliments to them as they all make such an effort to make our guests stay as enjoyable as possible.

In regards to the housekeeper she did have some bad news the previous week, so I imagine she was still not feeling her bubbly self as she normally is. I have passed on your comments and she sincerely apologises if you felt that she was a bit miserable.

Our Chefs purchase the very best produce locally which enables them in turn to deliver a very high quality menu, whether it be served in the restaurant or from the BBQ.

As we are a village pub we do have to consider our immediate neighbours and the other villagers, hence we have a midnight curfew. We unfortunately do not hold a 24 hour licence.

We do hope that you will return in the near future to sample the great food again.

We stayed for two nights over a weekend. We arrived on a Friday evening, and met family and friends whom were all attending the same wedding at the nearby Larmer Tree. The gentleman who checked us in was very pleasant and helpful. He was doubling on bar tending and was great with serving our drinks all evening. We had the backyard BBQ for dinner as they couldn't accommodate our large party outside. I found the BBQ quite expensive for very little food (£8.95 for a burger, no chips). We definitely felt like we were going to bed hungry. I would recommend skipping on the BBQ, but the rest of our weekend stay was great. Morning breakfast service was tasty. The staff were friendly. We had understood we would be provided with a daily paper with our room rate, but none of the guests in our party had received. I read another review which said the rooms were mildewed and worn. That wasn't our experience, but our room was really hot and got very humid after the shower has ran.

Room Tip: We were in room 3 which is quite small, even for two people, and overlooked the back of the building...

This small hotel/inn has retained its "village" atmosphere while incorporating many modern conveniences. The staff is wonderful and very gracious - no detail escapes their notice. We were there when the inn was full, with a large family occupying most of the rooms. But we never lacked for great service. We had breakfast and lunch there, ordered a variety of dishes and everyone enjoyed their food. We had the King's Room - it is large and comfortable, with a sitting area and plenty of drawers and surfaces to put our things. The bath was also very nice, with a large shower and plenty of water at just the right temp. The only reason this is not a 5-star review is that the door from the rooms to the downstairs sitting area, bar and restaurant was locked at 10 weeknights and not unlocked until 7 on any morning. I understand that all the liquor is out on shelves behind the bar, but they need to find another solution. One morning my husband was up early and did not want to wake me, so he tried to go downstairs and sit on the sofas there - no luck. He sat in the hall outside our room in a straight chair. (5 stars for him!) Except for this quirk, high marks!

Room Tip: Get the King's Room if you can - worth the money!

Stopped by for a quick bite to eat, although a little pricey this was compensated by the great service we received, especially the warm welcome from the two gentleman behind the bar, (special mention for the wine tasting)

I have stayed at this pub / hotel before when I was last over from AUS. I can see quite a difference.. gradually this wonderfully located english country retreat is becoming very tired looking, and dirty. The previous owner and his wife took great care with all the small detail and since it has been sold to a larger group company, the staff are constantly changing and there appears to be no one " in charge". The rooms and carpets look tired & worn, some rooms, have mildew and smell. You get the very basics in accommodation and yet you are expected to pay a top room rate. When I stayed and eat there the restaurant area was constantly plagued by flies. The food as it was previously, is excellent. I think the whole cleanliness of the place should be examined, the use of wooden boards for serving bread and the fact the bread is left uncovered for hours is not an encouraging sign. Since I last was here they have made some sup improvements to the outdoor garden, with a bar/grill located at the very top. I hope someone decides to " take charge" and fully maximise the opportunity this pub could offer. No robes in the bathroom, not skin moisturiser, so don't accidentally put the hair conditioner on as moisturiser...

Room Tip: If your budget allows choose the KING ROOM , BEWARE there is no phone signal at all, but they do hav...

Dear Dylan,

Thank you for your feedback from you stay at the King John Inn at Tollard Royal. We take great pride in our building and the surroundings. Both Alex and I are still an instrumental part of the King John Inn and are very conscious to keep the standards highs they have always been. It seems on your occasion that this may of slipped for this we are very sorry.
With regards to the staff, As we have done for the past 6 years we employ traveling staff who seem to have work very well for us. The down side to this is there is always a change of faces. As i do every week, I have been around the rooms this morning and cannot see and evidence of Mildew or the carpets looking warn. I am very glad that you have a great supper, and happy that you like the new garden area. Many Thanks for your comments. Best Regards, Gretchen
