Owner description: The Spirit of Peoria is an authentic paddlewheel driven vessel. The Spirit has no props or thrusters, and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel gensets, producing 700 kilowatts combined in 208 volt 3-phase voltage. The power is rectified using railroad-style rectifiers, probably from a GM GP38. The DC voltage goes to two traction engines, also from a GM locomotive, which drive the paddlewheel via two forty-foot-long by one-foot-wide chains. This allows the boat to be comparatively fast and efficient, burning approximately 15 gallons (57L) of diesel fuel an hour, with a top speed of over 15 mph (24 km/h). Its shallow draft of 4' enables the Spirit to land in just about any river town. Boarding is by 30' long boarding stages The boat is owned and captained by G. Alex Grieves, and co-captained by Alice Grady and Dylan Masonholder. It routinely travels up and down the Illinois River and Mississippi River.

10 years ago we promised our grandniece a trip on the Mississippi when she graduated. Last year I got ticket shock in reviewing prices, then discovered the Spirit of Peoria's five day St. Louis trip. . We left Austin, picked up Corbyn in Kansas and drove on to Peoria, wonderful drive. When we arrived we needed a washateria. The staff not only found one, but printed out driving instructions. The entire trip was great. In her junior year Corbyn had won the state drama with a selection from who else - Ken Bradbury. She not only got to meet him, he took the time to have lunch with her. Every facet of the trip, food, entertainment, lodging, etc. was so much more than we expected. This review is summed up iwith Corbyn's assessment - AWESOME!

Just returned from a family trip from Peoria to St. Louis to celebrate a milestone birthday. I can't say enough good things about the entire crew, they all seemed to work several different jobs on board, and did an excellent job at whatever task was at hand.

We had several special needs during the course of the trip, and they helped us with patience and grace. The food was excellent and plentiful, the storytelling and music kept us entertained. The pace was slow and relaxing, maybe a little too slow for the young folks in the family, but they had books and iPads. All in all, it was a nice and relaxing way to spend time with family from all over the country.

We just returned from the three day trip from Peoria to St. Louis. I cannot say enough about all of the crew - from the Captain, cook, waitresses, gift shop hostess, deck hands, and entertainers. They absolutely work as a family - doing anything that will make your trip enjoyable. Breakfast was ready when we boarded in Peoria and we ate good for the next three days. The entertainers, Brian, Barry and Ken were always available to do any music and storytelling They are all amazing idividuals. You meet the nicest group of people on this trip and feel like you are leaving family when you depart. It was a leisurely cruise down the lazy Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The overnight accommodations were very nice. The Abraham Lincoln Hotel and Museum are first class. Dress was very casual. We would highly recommend this trip to all our friends and family. Betty R. On August 6th my husband and I stepped aboard the Spirit of Peoria for a 2-day trip to Starved Rock State park. A great breakfast was being served and from that moment on we were eating and being entertained non-stop. The boat itself made us feel like we had stepped back in time 100 years. From the Captain to Ellen in the gift shop and the wonderful girls that served us great meals and snacks, everyone did their most to see that everyone had a great time. The accomodations at The Starved Rock Lodge were wonderful and a visit from "Mark Twain" in the lodge was great. The weather was probably the 2 best days we had all summer and just lazing on deck reading a book, floating on the Illinois river was a great relaxing treat. But what really made this a memorable trip was Brian "Fox" Ellis, Barry Cloyd, and Ken Bradbury. These three guys, each in his own way, are amazing!! All three are fonts of information and extremely talented individuals. I had never heard a professional story teller before and I now will seek them out. Brian brought tears to my eyes with a couple of his stories and made me laugh with others. Barry Cloyd is an amazing muscian and singer. He is amazing on the guitar and banjo. Ken Bradbury made the piano rock! He had some great stories, great songs that gave everyone a good laugh, and seemed to really enjoy himself and we really enjoyed listening to him. Brian was also our guide on two hikes at Starved Rock. This guy is really amazing in his knowledge and it was fun learning about plants, trees and history about our home state. Barry also contributed facts and stories on these hikes,
I have already recommended this trip to many friends and we are thinking of doing another one to St Louis. If you want something different, great atmosphere, great food, WONDERFUL entertainment and an all around great time this is it!!
