Owner description: The Spirit of Peoria is an authentic paddlewheel driven vessel. The Spirit has no props or thrusters, and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel gensets, producing 700 kilowatts combined in 208 volt 3-phase voltage. The power is rectified using railroad-style rectifiers, probably from a GM GP38. The DC voltage goes to two traction engines, also from a GM locomotive, which drive the paddlewheel via two forty-foot-long by one-foot-wide chains. This allows the boat to be comparatively fast and efficient, burning approximately 15 gallons (57L) of diesel fuel an hour, with a top speed of over 15 mph (24 km/h). Its shallow draft of 4' enables the Spirit to land in just about any river town. Boarding is by 30' long boarding stages The boat is owned and captained by G. Alex Grieves, and co-captained by Alice Grady and Dylan Masonholder. It routinely travels up and down the Illinois River and Mississippi River.

The riverboat was interesting, clean, and authentic. However, the Illinois River is boring - not much to really see. The trip was OK, but nothing really interesting.

I am sorry that you found the river boring. We can't do much to make it much more exciting, well maybe if the Asian carp were to jump. Thank you for kind words about the boat herself. We do hope that you might try one of our dinner or music cruises. You might find them a little more fun!

Great value for money. Took the moolight cruise with the 'Brazillionaires' band playing. The night was a full moon on Friday 13th June, and the moon rising as a deep orange ball was spectacular as was the band.

A must do if you are in Peoria.

You get a lot for your money on this cruise! Our group of 10 booked this cruise almost a year in advance and when it was time for our final payment they had given us two complimentary tickets. This brought our per person cost down to $440. This included all of our food, lodging, soft drinks, and the 3 day, 2 night cruise. The food was excellent and everyone was very friendly. Lots of entertainment as well. We traveled down the Illinois and Mississippi river with historical commentary along the way. I would highly recommend this cruise on the Spirit of Peoria!

We completely enjoyed our 2 day trip to Starved Rock. The food was excellent and plentiful. The entertainment was nearly constant and wonderful. We stayed over at the Lodge at Starved Rock State Park and the room there was adequate but older. We had some free time to walk around the park and that was very enjoyable. The breakfast at the Lodge was included and very good.
This is a great trip and would be wonderful for families. The only drawback is that if you cannot climb steps, you won't be able to walk around outside or be able to go up to the second level for the entertainment. The food is served on the first level so you would be okay there. Excellent trip and we really enjoyed the entertainment and Riverlorian.
