Much improved since our last visit. Menu looked delightful, Sunday roast was excellent. The garden is a bit uncared for, but with all the other improvements I'm sure it will look beautiful in time. We will visit again for Sunday roast when next cycling in the area.

Walked here for a lunch treat for a party of six of us. Good selection of food on the menu and very welcoming. Everyone's meal was fresh and tasty and the beer was excellent especially the wheat beer. Fast and friendly service, a really nice lunch out.

This pub is well positioned near the River Itchen, and the evening food menu is varied, competently cooked, and served with a smile.

My criticism would be that the rooms for overnight stay are a little overpriced for what they deliver - the rooms are small, with plenty of dust, shower is a trickle, and the bedside light lacked a light bulb. The bed was clean and very comfortable, though. It would be easy to smarten up the rooms and housekeeping - here's hoping that happens.

We've eaten here twice in the last month and both times it has been excellent - can't understand why it isn't busier! There is a large garden - we ate there on our most recent visit when we were lucky enough to have a warm evening - and plenty of parking. The menu should appeal to anyone - I've had the salmon special on both occasions because it was so delicious - lovely creamy sauce with spinach, etc. - and I'm told that the steak and ale pie and steaks are very good too. The chocolate brownie was more like a chocolate pudding but nonetheless delicious. Good selection of wines by the glass - excellent Sauvignon Blanc - and the beers were enjoyed too. It is set in beautiful countryside so we really enjoyed the drive to get there - and we will be back again before too long.

My boyfriend and I stayed here on Saturday, 19 May, the accommodation was outstanding, rooms were fabulous. The cooked breakfast in the morning was amazing, and the staff and landlord were really attentive and friendly. Would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere to stay near Winchester. Would come again! Thank you for a lovely stay. Chris and Kerry x

We called into this pub for a light lunch with friend as it was half way through our walk – the pub looks welcoming from the outside but what a disappointment once we sat down to eat.
The menus advertise home-made meals including soups and doorstep sandwiches, however after ordering home-made cream of tomato soup, door step sandwiches and open sandwiches we were served with soup that was clearly straight from a Heinz tin and sandwiches that were home-made from sliced supermarket bread! Not at all what we expected. I did ask the waitress if the soup was in fact home-made and after she checked with the chef was told that “apparently it was”.

The bar staff were also inexperienced and unsupervised: we had to ask that a pint of beer be topped up to a pint and no one behind the bar knew what measure to serve for a glass of sherry.
We definitely will not be using this pub again – be prepared and take a flask and sandwiches on your walk, save yourself the disappointment of the pub!

This trip was on 1st April - we we the April fools?

This pub is under new management and has been the subject of a major refurbisment so reviews prior to late 2012 are no longer relevant. I stopped here for lunch during the week with my family and took the opportunity to have a look at the B&B rooms.

The pub has an attractive dining area which benefits from new wooden furniture. The menu offers a reasonable range of standard pub fare together with a number of interesting specials. Prices are reasonable (Battered Cod £10.95, Baked Trout £11.95, Rump Steak £12.95). The food was well cooked and attractively presented.

Three of the four B&B rooms have now been fully refurbished with new carpets and beds, the fourth was due to come on line within the next few days. The room furnishings are functional rather than elaborate and whilst the decor is unsophisticated the rooms are not unattractive and present good value for money.

I liked this pub. The landlord and his staff were all very welcoming and the landlord was clearly going out of his way to make a go of the business. The real ale (Greene King IPA and Thwaites Wainwright were well kept and I will have no hesitation in returning for a pint and a bite to eat if in the area.
