We have again had a fantastic stay at the White Lion Inn! The menu has been changed and is still fabulous. A new covered deck has been added to the conference center but can also be used by guests to stay dry outside when it is raining. The dining areas have been re-arranged and it is still a pleasing experience.
We spent 4 nights this time in their 400-year-old accommodations and it was another great experience.
Lots of history, lots of fun, good food, and good times.

Highly recommend it for everyone and we will be returning again the next time we visit from the US.

Room Tip: Room 3 overlooks the back garden and conference center. Very scenic

The White Lion is situated in an idyllic village close to the Test river. The welcome and service are uniformly excellent - we frequently stop here on our way to the south coast.
As well as their range of home-made pies which are very good, the menu has some interesting choices for a local pub. I can vouch for the venison terrine which would be at home in a high class, expensive restaurant.
Here the food is not overpriced and the range of real ales, mostly local, is also very good.
In addition, you are offered a ticket for a 10% reduction in the bill for your next visit - something you don't often find - although we needed no incentive to return.

Stayed there overnight during house move. The Landlord is great so welcome and friendly. I have never ever stayed anywhere not ensuite but decided we would risk for one night. We had a massive room, all old and quirky and beautifully clean, really large comfy bed. They have 3 bathrooms and although all rooms occupied it was not a problem. Paddling to the bathroom during the night was not ideal, but if you are someone who does not have to do this then fine. The size of the room, service etc made up for it. Saying that I would not want to do this for more than 2 nights. I like my own bathroom, but in this case was not a problem.
The food is wonderful and a lovely breakfast, nothing too much trouble. The inn does need major updating, and TLC but clean and comfortable, the price reflects all of this. Given the same situation would stay again. A traditional friendly country Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with king sized bed

Great place!! Whatever you expect from a typical British country pub, you will be satisfied. We arrived quite late in the evening (but had called to advise), the kitchen was almost closing, but they waited a bit to serve us with a huge dinner. Quality of food was great, typical pub food but exquisite tastes: the kids (how difficult are they with food!) appreciated very much. The place was full of people, drinking and chatting, and we were welcomed very friendly. The rooms are at the first floor, we had two of them (double + treble) that were really large. They are not en-suite, but 3 bathrooms are available for 6 rooms, so we never "interfered" with the other guests. We really enjoyed the looking of the internal spaces, you cannot find a wall standing vertical nor a floor or ceiling laying flat… but this is exactly what we expected from such an ancient building as this is! The breakfast was great, typical full English or Continental but served at you orders, so we had only part of it and that was really enough (large portions). Great choice of jams and marmalades (seem homemade), excellent juices, fantastic salt butter. In the morning we visited the village, which is really beautiful: most houses have thatched roofs and Tudor style walls, traffic is almost absent, the beautiful and characteristic small church is worth a visit. We understood this is a place where people come to fish trouts, but our main impression was: quietness and peace! 20 minutes driving from Winchester, with the world-famous cathedral and Town-Hall with King Arthur round table… We spent here only one night but all of us thought this is a beautiful place to return in the future.
