“Very basic”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

We were hosted by a local family, so did not have to pay. The hostel was very basic. No locks on doors, foam mattresses, no bedside tables, one powerpoint in the room, no WiFi, thin walls, so could hear the person snoring in the next room, and people going to the bathroom. Having said that, it was VERY quiet otherwise, so I slept very soundly. View is beautiful, kitchen well equipped and clean, eating areas were spacious and clean. Bedrooms were not so clean with thick dust under the bed and rolls of hair/dust blowing around. Bathrooms were clean. Bedrooms had very little outside light (small windows) and curtains were not blockout. Sunscreen, insect screens and insect repellent provided. I returned covered (approx 80) bush ticks, and my husband had another 20 or so. Still scratching a month later - as though something is lodged in my skin. Wallabies pop in, as do king parrots, magpies and lots of other bird life. A nice place to be after you treck 15 mins UPHILL, but basic.

Room Tip: Higher numbers are further away from the bathroom.

Hi Alpaca
Thanks for choosing the stay at Pittwater YHA. This is promoted as a simple hostel in a stunning location and there is detailed information available on the location and access walk to the property on our website to help people to find it. The main building is an historic building with light and aspect accordingly. As you highlighted it is a getaway from it all location with lots of wildlife but it is also shared budget accommodation. Due to YHA's not for profit status and mission of helping people travel, we strive to keep this property available for guests in a unique spot.

I went with my three children (11,9 & 7) and three girlfriends with their children during the school holidays. There were 10 children in total.

From the minute we arrived it was as if they were tolerating our presence - we instantly felt like we needed to tiptoe. It was like walking into a library. There was an elderly couple who were quietly reading books. Any of the "youths" were reading books or using laptops.

We did not book the accommodation on the understanding that there was a requirement for peace and quiet.

However, it is what it is. I'm yet to walk past a school playground where groups of children play and interact quietly but if your kids are capable to doing so then this place is perfect for you.

PS. Interestingly on our return I was recalling our disappointing experience to a woman I met who told me she had also been there under exactly the same circumstances (multiple families) and treated with the same disdain.

Hi ACIAnge
Thanks for your review and we are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay at Pittwater YHA.
Hostels are a form of communal accommodation with a lot of shared space used by all guests, that requires a bit of give and take by all. Children are very welcome at the hostel with some understanding that there will be a variety of guests there at the same time with differing wishes from their stay.
This property does also offer an exclusive use Rent-a-YHA option where the whole hostel can be booked out at by a group which may suit some large family groups better.

One of the best kept secret accommodation locations close to Sydney.

Most travelers miss this excellent YHA with its location next to the Kuringai National Park and the sublime Pittwater area.

It is a great place to see Australian wildlife- usually wallabies in the mornings and /or evenings, sometimes lace monitors climbing up the nearby trees, the odd snake, and whole range of bird life from kookaburras, rainbow lorikets, magpies, butcher birds, minor birds etc.

Fantastic outdoor activities like bush walking or kayaking are available.

Because of its isolation and the lack of shops in the area you need to bring all your own food.
before taking the Church Point Ferry. Best to buy in a large supermarket on the way.

Stand on the verandah and see a million dollar view.

The co-managers are old hands and very helpful and keen that you have a sensational experience.

Room Tip: Choose the room the furthest away from reception

This accommodation is as far away from the city crowds and tourist traps as you can get. Right in the bush, but with all the modern amenities, heated water and comfy well-kept rooms. Sarah (the manager) has an extremely great knowledge of the surrounding area and can recommend the best walks and trails in Ku-ring-gai National Park (of which you will be spoilt for choice!). After a day out hiking, there is a well-equipped kitchen where you can prepare your meals. The ferry trip to the place (which goes around Scotland Island) is also quite an experience, as is waking up in the morning and finding a wallaby munching on grass right near your doorstep.

YHA Pittwater also runs completely off filtered rainwater, composts its rubbish and encourages recycling. Definitely something the eco-conscious traveller would appreciate!

From the ferry trip across from Church Point we were transported to bushland haven. A 10-15 min walk from the ferry wharf. As with all YHA you need to bring all your food and linen (we did hire the sheets to reduce what we needed to carry). Our family (2 x kids (6 & 9)) escaped for a few days from the rat-race of Sydney - school holidays in winter.
Wallabies greeted us as we entered the property and the spectacular view over Morning (Towlers) Bay captured our senses.
No road access meant that the only noises we heard in the morning were from birds and the wind through the trees. Michael & Sarah (managers) are very friendly and happy to assist with the local knowledge you need to get the most out of a escape such as this. We went bushwalking and kayaking over our few days.
As a YHA it is clean and tidy however basic (shared bathrooms, no air conditioning, internet terminals or television here!!).
A great escape were you can check in and chill out. We will be back again soon.

What a wonderful place to stay for peace and tranquility. Access by ferry from Church Point and walk up the hill. Michael or Sarah who manage the hostel are great hosts. Lots of wildlife and plenty of fresh air. Great short break or longer stay

If you want to get close to the nature and immerse in serenity, Pittwater YHA is a possible choice. Its located in the Ku Ring Gai nattional park where you will see parrots, smaller kangroo aka wallabee and other wild animals. The manager Machel and owner Sarah would advise on bush walk, swimming and kaiaking near the Morning Bay. 8 rooms are available with no locks though. Take L90 bus from city to Mona Vile, transfer to bus 155 or 156 to Church Point Wharf and take a ferry to Halls Bay, and walk up to YHA with around 15 minutes. Try to get there before sunset because there is no street lamps in the park.
