Quite by accident, we showed up at Mase's Place in Pomona, Illinois, in time for Friday night's Fish Fry. All-you-can-eat white fish. Everybody in town and everybody from every surrounding town must have been there. Opened in 2007 by Scot and Patty Mason, Mase's is located on the beautiful Shawnee Wine Trail in southern Illinois, between Carbondale and Murphysboro. It is a weekend-only restaurant, open from 5 to 11 on Friday and Saturday and 12 to 5 on Sunday. Reservations are accepted and the kitchen closes at 9:30. So arrive early and hungry. Mase's is a blend of southern cooking, regional wines and tasty and tangy barbecue in an atmosphere of a neighborhood grill. The signature item is BBQ sauce made from scratch by the Mason family. Also pub pickles and fried green beans for appetizers. The seafood on Friday night was fresh and delicious...white fish, tilapia, shrimp and catfish. We started with pub pickles, fried green beans, toasted sausage and cheese ravioli, cheese sticks and Caesar salad, fully a meal in itself. If you aren't inclined to order seafood, other options are baby back ribs, grilled ribeye, smoked pulled pork, 1/2 smoked chicken and the BBQ sampler (choose three from smoked brisket, baby back ribs, pulled pork and chicken breast) for entrees with sides of corn, green beans, baked beans, cole slaw, red potato salad, fries, baked potato or hushpuppies. Sandwiches? Lots of choices, including brisket burger, Super burger, smoked pork, Classic Ruben, smoked beef brisket, grilled turkey burger, Italian beef, grilled chicken and white fish, catfish and tilapia filets. Wash it all down with a couple of big frosty mugs of root beer. Don't forget to browse at the extensive collection of classic 33 1/3 rpm record albums from the 1950s and 1960s. Like Mase's, they'll bring back a lot of fond memories.
