“Exceeded all our expectations”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

Just two hours from Goma this hidden gem exceeded all our expectations. Classy and stylish in a good way, luxurious, but not over the top. Even has wifi. Lovely bungalows, very well furnished with big comfy beds, a huge veranda and a fire place that is lit every evening, what else could you want? Absolutely stunning scenery, beautiful view on volcanoes on walking distance, if you are lucky with the weather. The lodge just recently reopened, and staff are still being trained, but truly very friendly, the Zimbabwean management couple are great hosts and working hard to bring back tourism to this stunning corner of the world (there are plans to build accommodation on top of the volcano once security allows). Food is tasty, with products from the lodge's own vegetable garden, sip your coffee and tea served on the terrace in the morning while watching monkeys play in the trees. Big common lounge area with fire place and huge sofas. If working in Goma this is a great place to spend a weekend, highly recommended!

Yes, this is Congo.
Yes, you're safe!
And, it WILL take your breath away!
None of that over-the-top excess that has no business being in a jungle forest.
This is laid-back luxury.
Simple decadence that pampers but doesn't spoil.
While you are away from everything, still your every comfort will be seen to.
The staff is friendly, professional and eager to see that you are satisfied at all times.
The individual cottages, complete with roaring fire each evening, are a honeymoon or anniversary delight.
Simplified elegance.
The forest beckons but you may not want to get out of the comfy bed.
And the meals could compete with fine restaurants anywhere.
Where did they find their chef???
Numerous activities are available during your stay, including hiking through magnificent farmland to picturesque caves, an active volcano trek and even more precious, the chance to have an incredibly up-close experience with the magic of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Mikeno Lodge.
Wow!
Go!

Mikeno Lodge is a hidden gem within Virunga National Park that will not take long to be discovered. The bungalow accommodation is spacious, luxurious & very private, each with fabulous tree or valley views. Each bungalow has it's own fireplace, which the staff light every evening while you are out enjoying the scrumptious dinner. Make sure you make your way to the main lodge well before dinner to share stories with fellow guests, while enjoying a drink by the fire & don't miss out on the cheese!
Mikeno Lodge is perfect for chilling out or as a base for the adventurous, with gorilla, chimp & volcano hikes in the surrounding area. There is a gorilla sanctuary onsite which houses orphaned/rescued gorillas. Just ask Laure or Dominique on how these little miracles found their way to the sanctuary, you're sure to shed a tear & truly appreciate the work the rangers do.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mikeno Lodge. It was hard to leave & we will be back next time we're in Africa!

Accommodation at Mikeno Lodge were excellent, Laura, Sarah, Cai and Dominique are wonderful hosts how have amazing stories to share and tons of experience in the region. The park attractions are some of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. In particular the volcano treks. See the pictures. Wow.

We stayed at Mikeno Lodge both after doing the gorillatracking and then again after the Nyiragongo overnight hike. And what a pleasure! The lodge is owned by the Virunga National Park and it is located within the premises of the park headquarter among beautiful old trees. The lodge had opened officially only one week earlier so we were among the first guests. So what did we get...beatiful bungalows, top food, personalised service, wondeful suroundings. And something you for sure not will get at any other lodge - staying only a short stroll from the enclosure of the orphaned gorillas and with a an active vulcano thrown in as after dinner entertainment.
