“A real pearl up in Virunga NP...”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Not that there are many other lodges to choose from, but this is still a top rated lodge compared to all other Mountain lodges in the region including Uganda and Rwanda - having a few to compare with. People have not yet found there way back to this lovely place/base for Mountain Gorilla Treking in the Virunga NP.

We certainly felt very safe and very well looked after during our stay. The Mountain Gorilla trek in the Virunga NP is more genuine, smaller groups in all c.w. the once you do in Uganda and Rwanda. I really preferred this place. We had hopes also to do the Nyiragongo Volcano trek, but this is still closed. Rumors has it it will be opened again in August..

,,,so we'll just have to come again - next year!

We loved staying at the Mikeno and really felt like part of the family by the time we left. I would definitely stay again and wish Richard and Jilly all the best as they are fantastic hosts who go out of their way to make you feel like your the only guests at the lodge. There are lots of activities to keep you busy including coffee plantation visits, cave expeditions, gorilla trekking, village walks and trips out with the dogs used to catch poachers. The bath is heavenly, the coffee is fresh and addictive and the beds are cozy and warm, perfect for chilly evenings as the fire roars and the monkeys play outside. Don't think twice, go there now before the rest of the world does and help out the Virunga whilst enjoying some much needed r'n'r. Bliss.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3, which is great as its next to the lobby which is handy as you can just pop up i...

Mikeno Lodge is an oasis in a country that has seen so much hardship for many years. Mikeno Lodge provides a wonderful platform from which to explore this amazing forgotten gem of a National Park. The accommodation, friendliness of the staff and management team at Mikeno Lodge are superb. The Gorilla trekking experience in Virunga is unique, and the new tented camp at Bukima (where you start the Gorilla trek), is a must for anyone considering going to Virunga. From Mikeno Lodge you can see the incredible spectacle of the Nyiragongo Volcano (the largest Lava Lake in the world) and Nyamalagira Volcano, that is currently blowing huge clouds of smoke and ash into the air. Now is the time to visit Virunga and Mikeno lodge, before the rest of the world discovers this Lodge, the Park and the incredible experiences that they offer.

Room Tip: All the rooms are similar in design, you are located in the forrest at Rumangabo, with great views...

If you are in DRC, you must come visit this place. If you are not in DRC, you also must come visit this place. It is wonderful, luxurious, quiet, friendly, peaceful, and any other positive adjective you could possibly think of that would fit a lodge in the middle of the jungle. The Virunga is a treasure, the park rangers true professionals, the people managing the lodge absolutely lovely and helpful. Staying here and seeing the gorillas in their natural surroundings is a once in a lifetime experience. You will not be disappointed, it will be everything you expect and probably more.

Wow! This is an AMAZING lodge surrounded by an AMAZING national park.

You may have read of the troubles in DRC and may have seen travel warnings from your government, HOWEVER tourism is returning to Virunga National Park and now is a great time to visit.

As you would expect in Africa, all the staff at the lodge are extremely friendly and helpful. The accommodation is perfect and the setting is absolutely stunning - surrounded by a monkey filled forest and fantastic views across the park. And the food.....wow.....the food could match any restaurant.

All in all you cannot fault the lodge, it is wonderful. I have done my fair share of traveling but I rate this as the best place i have ever stayed.

Then you have the national park - Virunga, It has had it's troubles, but everyone in the park - the dedicated rangers, wardens, trackers, soldiers etc - are all working extremely hard to reopen all the attractions to visitors.

I was there from 9 June 2014 and at that point they had both the Gorilla trekking and the Chimp trekking open, and what can I say......the awe of coming face to face with one of our closest relatives is an unparalleled experience.

Soon they will have the volcano trek open too, and when they do I will make sure i return.

If you are thinking of visiting Virunga National Park then I would say that now is a good time to go and that Mikeno Lodge is the place to stay,

Do it now before the world rediscovers it ! The place is AMAZING and I echo everything that ritajeff says below.

Not for a second did i feel unsafe in either the National Park or in Goma during my 3 day visit and I only wish i could have stayed longer......I will return !

Just two hours from Goma this hidden gem exceeded all our expectations. Classy and stylish in a good way, luxurious, but not over the top. Even has wifi. Lovely bungalows, very well furnished with big comfy beds, a huge veranda and a fire place that is lit every evening, what else could you want? Absolutely stunning scenery, beautiful view on volcanoes on walking distance, if you are lucky with the weather. The lodge just recently reopened, and staff are still being trained, but truly very friendly, the Zimbabwean management couple are great hosts and working hard to bring back tourism to this stunning corner of the world (there are plans to build accommodation on top of the volcano once security allows). Food is tasty, with products from the lodge's own vegetable garden, sip your coffee and tea served on the terrace in the morning while watching monkeys play in the trees. Big common lounge area with fire place and huge sofas. If working in Goma this is a great place to spend a weekend, highly recommended!

Yes, this is Congo.
Yes, you're safe!
And, it WILL take your breath away!
None of that over-the-top excess that has no business being in a jungle forest.
This is laid-back luxury.
Simple decadence that pampers but doesn't spoil.
While you are away from everything, still your every comfort will be seen to.
The staff is friendly, professional and eager to see that you are satisfied at all times.
The individual cottages, complete with roaring fire each evening, are a honeymoon or anniversary delight.
Simplified elegance.
The forest beckons but you may not want to get out of the comfy bed.
And the meals could compete with fine restaurants anywhere.
Where did they find their chef???
Numerous activities are available during your stay, including hiking through magnificent farmland to picturesque caves, an active volcano trek and even more precious, the chance to have an incredibly up-close experience with the magic of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Mikeno Lodge.
Wow!
Go!
