This fantastic hotel is a haven of peace and tranquillity, so it's not suitable for people looking for TV or wifi. It's old fashioned in style but the décor and furnishings are spotlessly clean. Your dogs are welcome too which is a nice touch. You get very well looked after here and the staff are very attentive. If you're not a hotel guest you're welcome in the walkers bar which is worth a visit in itself. You don't get phone signal here which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. We were summoned for dinner at 7pm prompt by a dinner gong and again at 9am for our full English breakfast. The food was beautifully cooked for both meals and the evening wine list was good quality. The other guests were very friendly and it was nice to relax after our dinner in one of the sitting rooms, complete with roaring log fires.
There are plenty of other hotels in the Lakes that belong to chains that cater for the masses, but who wants to go there when you can go here?

We stayed at the Howtown Hotel for a long weekend last weekend, our purpose being to take full advantage of the gorgeous location near the shores of Ullswater by walking around the surrounding fells.
We visit the Lakes regularly, and Ullswater occasionally, though we'd never before stayed at the Howtown. The previous hotels we'd used were larger, certainly, but with far less personal service. Some indeed seem only geared towards the wedding industry, and one in particular should be avoided at all costs, if one doesn't want to be kept awake at all hours by the partying of drunken wedding guests.
What a relief then to find the Howtown Hotel. Many of the fellow guests that we spoke to (an elderly crowd generally, it has to be said) had been visiting the hotel for up to 30 years. Traditional values of personal service, a warm welcome and great food have not gone out of fashion here. Its an old fashioned place, certainly, but unashamedly so. Our room was clean and spacious, with a great view. Breakfast and dinner were served in huge portions, announced by a gong in the foyer. What a refreshing change from the sterile chain hotels that now sadly pepper the Lakes. Highly recommended!

Stumbled upon this on a long and hot walk when on our honeymoon many years ago but did not actually stay until about 5 years ago. Since then we have returned for a week in a holiday cottage every year. The location is stunning and the hotel utterly charming ...if you like that sort of thing. Do not expect 'have a nice day' service and posh menus full of pretentious, aspirational cuisine. The food is simple but plentiful and well cooked. The fires are lit before breakfast and kept in until the last person goes to bed. The bar is a gem and I would imagine much sought after as a film set.
No WiFi,no mobile signal,no gaming machines,no arrogant demanding yuppies.

There aren't many choices at Howtown. We walked local Wainwrights and then descended to the hotel. As walkers we were only allowed into the tiny bar at the back (granted it was mid week, mid afternoon, mid October). No roaring fire here and little in the way of service. We just seemed to be a nuisance to the bar man, who needed repeated requests to provide what we wanted. The beer and sandwiches were excellent when they arrived. So go, it's all there is, but don't expect too much.

We stumbled across the Howtown Hotel after a lovely walk around Ullswater. We were desperate for a cup of tea and a place to relax for an hour or so. What a find! We were greeted warmly and served tea, scones and biscuits by a roaring fire in one of the many cosy lounge rooms. We stayed for a couple of hours, and almost stayed for dinner... this place is an absolute gem. If you want to get away from it all (no mobile reception, no wi-fi, not even a fax machine) this is your place. Stunning location-- will definitely be back to stay.

We first came here in May "Our Honeymoon" was the review.
We returned in September and had the same wonderful experience.
The accomodation cottage was perfect for us and as very busy people looking after stock and crops catching a holiday is very precious to us allowing us to break completely.
This place suits us perfectly and we shall continue to return for the walks and the peace and the traditional country house hotel flavour.

I have stayed here many times and know the place well. It is a fantastic, traditional, family-run hotel in an idyllic location. The food is great, the atmosphere is relaxing, standards are high and the fells are on the door step. It is the perfect escape.
