“Just the bar and garden”
Reviewed 11 June 2013

Hi all

If you are going to do the steamers or the walk back from howtown.
Then pop in to this little bar at the back of the howtown hotel now I have read some reviews and I guess i can understand what they say about food ect but this hotel is different so don't go there expecting pub grub just go for the bar and the garden it's lovely for a couple of beers before starting your walk we had great weather all week so enjoyed going there a couple of times.....
3 quid a pint good weather what more do you want.

All staff friendly we are intrigued so we are going to spend a couple of nights.....

Remember not a normal hotel you have access only to the bar and garden not to the hotel
Go and enjoy a beer and relax

Wonderful place. Visited many times over the years and we are some of the more recent discoverers of this very obliging and friendly place. Many have been coming for 40 years or more so the management must be doing something right. Haute Cuisine it is not-but who wants that after a hard day's walking in the fells! The great joy of the place is to be able to walk out straight onto the hills and know that you will get a delightful meal at the end of it.. Hot water is plentiful and that is important after a day out. Bread and butter pudding to die for!

Room Tip: All the rooms I have stayed in have been great. Perhaps best not over the front door if you go to be...

For the perfect country retreat spend a few days and nights at the Howtown Hotel. We went in April and found it a real treat. My father in law said it was like a spell on the old QE2 but on dry land. Charming waitresses/maids in Victorian black dresses tiptoe around offering you a tray of tea or drinks from the bar in any one of five lounges all of which look out over the very lovely and peaceful Ullswater. It's on a dead end road so very very peaceful, only a few walkers about. It is also very close to a ferry pier, so you can take a trip on an ancient steamer across or around the whole lake. Perfect for walking, and perfect for doing absolutely nothing. Very dog friendly: dogs in bedrooms but not in bars or lounges. Dinner is a real occasion. The maids don white starched aprons and you all file in at the sound of the gong for a formally served old fashioned English dinner. You don't have to dress at all formally but if you enjoy getting dressed up feel free!

Room Tip: Just be sure to ask for a lake view, of course!

Very pleasant staff, nice public reception areas and reasonable bedroom (with bathroom – some don’t have) – however, expensive for what it is, and poor food. All meals have to be taken at the set time, choice is limited, and not really very good quality. For example, Egg mayonnaise starter was an egg with a dolup helmans (or worse). Main course for me was roast turkey, and for my wife liver and bacon – both cooked ok, but no more than that. Breakfast was adequate, with only those at the front of the line getting the fresh fruit salad – and they were disinclined to re-fill.

Cost was over £200 for 2 people dinner B&B a night with a couple of glasses of ok wine. Overall disappointing – given the fantastic location and potential. Get the food and service right (or perhaps simply more up to date) and a few other little things, and then this would be a really brilliant hotel.

Value in every sense...as Canadians, we felt truly welcomed, not only by the Baldry family and staff, but by the other guests. Wonderful food and drinks....great conversation and a very lovely, intimate bar. The setting & scenery have been described by others much more eloquently than we could.

This was our second trip to the Howtown Hotel, having first stopped off for tea in October 2012. We were so impressed we booked to stay for a few days in April. We weren't disappointed. Don't come here for the wifi.... come here to experience a few days without phones, ipads, email. Enjoy the numerous cosy lounges scattered throughout the hotel-- my favourite was the one on the first floor with a beautiful window seat and view of the lake. Ask the charming staff for tea whenever you want it (including breakfast tea in bed every morning at 8!). Gather in the gorgeous cosy bar for pre-dinner drinks with your friendly fellow guests. Relax after dinner, with coffee and chocolates served in front of a fire. The menu is probably unchanged from the 40s, but the food is excellent, served piping hot, there's a decent wine list too. The hotel is a walkers paradise, with numerous rambles right from the door. But best of all, revel in the silence and peace of this quiet corner of Ullswater.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main hotel building, in room 1, which had a view of the lake. My father was in the...

This fantastic hotel is a haven of peace and tranquillity, so it's not suitable for people looking for TV or wifi. It's old fashioned in style but the décor and furnishings are spotlessly clean. Your dogs are welcome too which is a nice touch. You get very well looked after here and the staff are very attentive. If you're not a hotel guest you're welcome in the walkers bar which is worth a visit in itself. You don't get phone signal here which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. We were summoned for dinner at 7pm prompt by a dinner gong and again at 9am for our full English breakfast. The food was beautifully cooked for both meals and the evening wine list was good quality. The other guests were very friendly and it was nice to relax after our dinner in one of the sitting rooms, complete with roaring log fires.
There are plenty of other hotels in the Lakes that belong to chains that cater for the masses, but who wants to go there when you can go here?
