While the indoor museum is interesting, it is the Victorian Village that is the real star here. You get to walk through a rural village and docents will help you appreciate the experience. There are hour long tours that will familiarize you with all the wonderful buildings and the gardens. A must do for any visitor to Rockford.

We like going here for just a nice walk around, but especially for the safe trick or treat. They always do a great job, and make it a lot of fun for the kids.

PROS: informative indoor exhibits ( they have a plane and a train depot inside); picturesque village outdoors with a church, hospital, fire station, general store, bank, hotel, school, barn, blacksmith and other period houses on the premises. There is a beautiful walking path beside the village that is regularly utilized people around the neighborhood.

CONS: none.

If you want to know and see what Rockford of yesteryear was like, this is the place to go. Even as a long-time resident of the area, I learned something new. Be aware that if you plan on visiting the village (guided tour to see the insides) that the path around it is gravel, which isn't so great for wheelchairs or non-jogging strollers. Since these are historic buildings, they aren't all accessible so plan accordingly. The museum has special programs (WWII days and vintage baseball games) that are highly recommended and worth checking out.

The buildings and history is great. It is an interactive outdoor museum that everyone can enjoy. The special programs that are put on are just great. Fun time for everyone over 4 years of age
