For years, I've stayed downtown while in Chicago, being aghast at the astronomical hotel price tag summer weekends can carry. Now, I stay at the InterContinental O'Hare and drive or take the nearby train down to shop.
Contemporary vibe, art galleries, cool Mediterranean bar/ tapas bistro- the very new property is nearly seductive... while passing itself off as a business hotel throught the week.
Negotiate your way into one of their two room suites and you'll have a great weekend at a fraction of the cost of the downtown five star places.
A couple of cons...
The rainshower leaves a lot to be desired. Not enough waterpressure to get a quick shower, and if you need to keep your hair dry - there is no hand held option. The deep, deep soaking tub is pretty amazing, however!
The platform beds don't have the great pillowtop mattress that you find in most high end hotels. Okay sleep, but a noticable difference in bed comfort.
An indoor pool would be nice, but the fitness center is outstanding.More
