Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge
Reviewed 5 August 2013

An incredible vacation experience highlighted by outstanding food (especially local catch), an array of relevant outdoor activities (hiking to a glacier lake, fishing for Salmon and Char off of an estuary, ocean kayaking, tidal pooling, wildlife viewing, etc), rustic and comfortable accommodations, and the attention to every need and/or detail by a responsive, friendly, knowledgeable staff. We will definitely be back...and soon!

Room Tip: Each couple or family enjoys their own cabin.

We have stayed in many wonderful places, but nothing has approached this. It was a privilege to participate in an experience of such quality: everything from the cabins, to the food, to the services, to the guides. The staff wants to and does know you. Ask for lemonade at lunch and you'll be offered it for the rest of your stay. Mention an interest and they'll find a way to make sure it happens. This goes beyond anything you are likely to have experienced and I can't say enough about it.

We visited Kachemak Bay summer of 2012. They truly design your experience for each individual guest. Every evening during appetizers the events coordinator speaks to you to discuss possible experiences for the next day; hiking, tied pooling, kayaking, fishing, etc. They do everything they can to meet your expectations. The naturalist and staff are friendly and accommodating.

The food is spectacular. The chef has his own garden that he harvests from for the meals. The fish the guest catch and the mussels you collect while tied pooling is served for dinner or appetizers. The chef takes great pride in all the meals he prepares.

You leave this place feeling like you had a true Alaskan experience verses a touristy experience. We loved the cozy intimacy of the place; being one of 12 guests is fabulous. I would recommend the 5 night stay. Utilize your time at the lodge for lodge experiences and book fishing trips and bear watching; before your arrival or after your departure.

We rented a car in Anchorage and drove to Homer Alaska. This is a beautiful drive, plan on taking your time for at least one of the directions so you can pull off and enjoy the scenery.

Room Tip: Remember the gratuity is not included in the rates so bring cash or check, this is given at the end...

We had a great time here. We went in August as friends who had been there suggested this time. The mosquitoes are virtually gone, and the weather is generally good. The downside is this is high season and very expensive. Think Manhattan, then add $5. Gas is about $4.35 a gallon. Halibut fish and chips are $20. A 14 ounce local beer is 6.99. At the lodge things are wonderful. The staff turn back flips to make you happy. Breakfast is good, and if there is left over salmon ask for salmon eggs benedict for breakfast. Do not miss the appetizers before dinner. None were bad but our favorites were king crab legs from the Bering straight, Todd's spring rolls with salmon, and the blue mussels. Who needs dinner with these offerings? We did the glacier lake hike. We also had the benefit of a repeat customer, who did the glacier lake after we did and came back with glacier ice from the lake. You must be tough to get in that lake. Gin and tonic over glacier ice is hard to describe, but try not to miss it. The ice is 6000 years old and melts slower than normal ice. We also did a bear viewing excursion with Emerald Air. If we did it again, we would do the bear viewing excursion outside of our stay at KBWL, not during it. Lesson learned. Bring gear for rain, and the best binoculars you can buy. If you have a smartphone check out Tripjournal. Pack light and with layers and do not dress up.

The setting is the peaceful China Poot bay is just faboulous: quite, distant from any noise of the city.
The lodge provides guest with professionally guided activities, such as hikes (of all difficulties, if requested), kayak, fishing, tidal pool exploration etc.
Gourmet meals will satisfy even the most sophisticated palates.
Service is just unparalleled, with a ratio staff-to-guests almost at 1:1.

Nonetheless, the aspect that really made our stay at the lodge memorable was the owners' and staff's attitude, which really made us feel like being at home, in a large family.
Thanks Kachemak Bay lodge for the memorable experience.

In any case, if one really wanted to point out some potential improvements, I sould point out that at lunch only a packed lunch is provided, even though one might choose to remain at the lodge. But this little element would never change a bit of the value of this wonderful experience

We stayed as a family at Kachemak Bay with 8 other people. It is across the bay from Homer and truly in a roadless area. We had a different outdoor activity every day-fishing for Salmon, hiking to a glacier, sea kayacking to look at bears, harvesting clams and mussels at low tide. We ate what we caught along with great wine and beer. The family owners and the staff were great to us and our kids. We are definitely coming back.

The scenery, activities, cabins, and meals were all fantastic. A friendly professional staff, excellent fine dining, and only 12 guests per week. I would highly recommend this unique wilderness lodge.
