It will never win any awards! Rooms are ok, but hot water varies from non existent to just warm. when I visited there was a wedding being celebrated, and we were given a dinning table in the same room as the wedding party, and had to listen to the speeches whist we ate. Wi-Fi is supposed to be available, but failed to work for most of the time. It does have a swimming pool, well 2 but only 1 had water in it, with views of the stele field. If you go to visit the church where the Ark of the Covenant is held be aware that you cannot get very close, armed guard will stop you, Men are allowed closer than women.

Room Tip: Try another hotel!

Having not showered the night before in Mekelle (see review of AxumHotel there) and finding the water hot I went to shower on trying to add a bit of cold the pipe cracked inside the wall. So after rushing down to the lobby so they could shut the water off we were given the room next door. The staff were fine and we changed 100$ there at the best rate the whole trip.. The dinner was only passable and breakfast one of the poorest during the 18 days.. As to value I can not say as it was part of the tour.. If I were to return to Axum I would try one of the other hotels.

Recently stayed at the yeha hotel due to its proximity to the Aksum stelae and previous traveller reviews. The hotel was a disappointment from the outset, compared to other hotels in the same price bracket in Ethiopia, the yeha hotel offers poor value for money; it is dated, no hot water then no water at all during our stay and reception and senior hotel staff are useless, requests for hot water, towels etc received no response! Most other staff in the hotel however were very obliging and are happy to assist in any way.

The hotel food is below average despite reviews in guide books to the contrary; ranging from bland to disgusting. One of our party sent a course back only to over hear the restaurant manager inform the member of staff in Amharic that this would be deducted from his salary. Needless to say we opted to pay for the meal in order to prevent any hardship being visited on the hotel staff.

This hotel really needs to overhaul both it's facilities and its staff or drop its prices!

Room Tip: Simple; stay elsewhere

I visited Axum purely because it is where the ark of the covenant supposedly lies. However I began to doubt on my time there whether it does or not.

However the hotel Yeha was very pleasant to stay in, with friendly staff, clean rooms, and nice surroundings....

Definitely the worst hotel of 6 we stayed in during our trip. Such a shame as location superb -good view from the terrace and can easily walk into town. I think the heavy furnishings including thick carpet do not inspire confidence in the cleanliness. We had a "suite" i.e. two large rooms one a sitting room. Management should rip out all furnishings and make it simple and easy to clean. Travel Agent had warned us the Yeha was the weak link in the chain. Having stayed in hotels in much more remote and poorer areas in West Africa there is no excuse for the lack of cleanliness. Mosquito netting over the windows had holes in, mattress was very old and uncomfortable and no protector. Despite spraying everything & burning mosquito coils we still got bitten during the night. I suspect bed bugs.
Bathroom filthy and needs total refurbishment as does the whole hotel. We didn't bother showering at all as only there one night and made do with a "strip" wash. No water on arrival at midday but they can't help that. Good TV and signal though! and good mobile signal. Food ok-ish. We both had menu of the day in the hope that it would be the best choice it was mostly edible. My husband's cheese omelette was the best choice for breakfast. The staff, however, were very nice and deserve better. Luckily we only stayed one night as didn't want to stay for another sleepless night being bitten.

Room Tip: Room 227. We didn't see any other rooms so I don't know if any were better than this one. See main review for comments on mattress, furnishings and bathroom.
