“Peace and views”
Reviewed 26 February 2014

We spent a night in Apartment 23C - a new one bedroom apartment converted from the laundry of the house originally used as residences for the Coxswain and Driver, when Cockatoo Island was a working dockyard. It's a beautifully fitted out apartment, small but lovely! The views from the deck are wonderful, as the apartment is on the upper level of the island. A perfect spot for a glass of champagne (note - you can only bring alcohol to the island if you are staying overnight in one of the residences, NOT if you are camping there).

You don't even have to walk to the apartment with your bags - the island has a little fleet of golf carts to carry you there. But you do need to be good with stairs to walk around the island and see everything.

We had a drink at the Island Bar, and as there was a group there from a conference, they had live music. But beware - there is nowhere to eat on the Island in the evenings apart from the pizza van (no complaints - great pizzas with an exceptional view! but if you are after fine dining you will be disappointed). Breakfast the next morning in the cafe was also good - watching the harbour come alive and the workers head to work :-)

Highly recommended for an overnight, inner city stay with a difference.

Room Tip: All three apartments have decks with fabulous views.

Our group of 7 stayed in one of the 4 bedroom historic houses.
I had no idea what to expect so was pleasantly surprised to find a beautifully renovated house with extremely comfortable beds, amazing views, lovely furnishings, modern kitchen and bathrooms all in a generously proportioned house.
If you'd like to find somewhere for a weekend away without traveling away from Sydney, this is the perfect place. You do need to bring all of your food and drink though, and carry iy over on the ferry. We all just brought bags and eskies on wheels and it wasn't too difficult. There is a cafe and the Island Bar where one can buy light meals, pizza and drinks but we only found this useful during the day as they're open to the elements. You could easily catch a ferry to the city for more options.
The island itself is so interesting. I recommend doing the audio tour to discover the whole history. It's only $5. We had the added benefit of seeing part of the island set up as a set for Angelina Jolie's latest movie. To see snow covered dockyards from China on Sydney Harbour was an experience.
There are also 2 bedroom apartments and a 1 bedroom which were quite reasonably priced, especially when compared with the price of staying in the tents on the island.

The volunteers on Cockatoo Island do a great job advising visitors on what to see and do. I was there for a get together with school friends, and we were to have lunch together for the first time in 30 years. The two vans selling hot food were a bit disappointing. Otherwise, the history of the island was excellent. Seems that the Glamping area could get very overcrowded during tourist season as the tents are quite close together. I enjoyed the day, but the food was pretty ordinary.

Room Tip: Can not comment on the rooms as I was only there for the day, BUT, having looked at the overnight co...

Living just 5 minutes Away but having never been to Cockatoo Island, we implore everyone to get there. The accommodation was amazing....fully fitted out, fully functional and including all the small things. The view!!!!! To die for and the island iteself was fully of history and wonder.

We could not recommend more highly spending a night in 23C...a one bedroom apartment perched on the clifftop looking down the harbour. The one issue.....watch out for the nursing mother seagulls protecting their young...so cute but don't get too close

The location is simply magnificent. Ten of us visited Cockatoo Island for a family celebration, staying two nights in Building 24A. Several dozen day-trippers joined us in one of three large meeting rooms which can be hired for this sort of event elsewhere on the island.

The island provides spectacular views of much of the harbour foreshore, including the Harbour Bridge, as well as offering up close and personal contact with fascinating industrial architecture from the shipbuilding part of island history and the more grim convict constructed sandstone buildings.

Our accommodation was well appointed with a full kitchen, plenty of dining and lounge space, an assortment of TVs, DVDs and other entertainment gear. Next door is the tennis court with possibly the best view in Sydney.

Ferries to the island are regular, although I'd recommend advance planning to find free untimed parking near a ferry wharf at busy times. (We parked not far from the Valentia Street wharf at Woolwich.) The water taxi option can be very expensive compared with the ferry.

Cockatoo Island is administered by the Australian Government through the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and it has World Heritage Listing so, hopefully, we'll never read a TripAdvisor review of a 500 room international hotel on Cockatoo Island. That would be a tragedy.

Visit Cockatoo Island, if only for a day. It's a special place.

Stayed here for 2 nights in a tent package and loved the ambience, views, location, history and particularly the relaxed character of other people staying there. Great bathrooms and shared cooking facilities too. Well worth a visit for locals and visitors alike.

After a bit of organization, not on my part, it was Cockatoo Island for a family reunion.

We booked out the Historic houses for the weekend, happen to coincide with the closing weekend of biennale.

The accommodation was great, the homes more than comfortable with a self cater affair. Tennis overlooking the harbour bridge, seemed like a Nike TV tennis commercial set. Strolling around the island taking in the art, views and history, a magnificent weekend.

Definatley a bucket list experience. A must!
