“Promise not quite fulfilled”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

This gastro-pub has a long varied menu (which makes one suspect they have a large deep-freeze) without anything tempting out of the ordinary and the helpings are large but not too expensive. However the bare tables are crammed too close together and the service not impeccable, having to be corrected twice. It offers a satisfying lunch but without ecouraging a wish to go there for a special meal.

“Classic Village Pub”
Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

Had lunch here recently mid week, this is a village pub atmosphere but also excellent restaurant facility, food very good with a nice selection both on the blackboard and standard a la carte
Very good wine selection to compliment the food choice.
Staff very friendly and attentitive. It has two lovely log fires that produce that automatically relaxing feeling, especially on damp grey days.
The only real let down is the gents toilets, for an establishment of this calibre they should really spend some money on them and upgrade them from a spit and sawdust version to a restaurant version.

“Good pub food”
Reviewed 18 April 2014 via mobile

Have been eating here on and off for 3-4 years but this was our first visit back for over a year. Food quality and choice very good still, I had a mushroom risotto with Tarragon (which should really be described as a tarragon risotto with the odd mushroom) but was still light and pleasant, and my wife had the Lincolnshire sausage and mustard mash, both of which were good plates of food, above the average quality one would expect for pubs in the area. Prices are a little high (average around £12 per dish) but food quality was good and reflected in the price. Would recommend this place still for a decent quality meal in an old fashioned pub setting.

“Oozes olde world English charm”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

While staying in Reading on business from the USA, my gracious UK host located this restaurant for an authentic English pub experience. He hit it right on!! This definitely isn't a place the normal tourist would just find. It's out of the way in a small village. We went pretty late on a Sunday evening, so the place was quiet.

I had to duck going in the main door and at just about every beam - all of the ceilings were low, which added to the ambience. The walls were just chock full of pictures and memorabilia from days gone by. There were at least two fireplaces running as well.

The service and food were both great, with a good variety of items. I had the venison, which was awesome.
