Description: The Highwayman Inn is located in a beautiful hamlet near Checkendon, on the Berkshire, Oxfordshire border, only an hour from London and 20 minutes from Reading and Henley on Thames. The pub dates back to the 16th century and still retains some of its original characteristics. Our aim is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy our award winning food. We are committed to using local suppliers and produce with above all an eye for quality. If things go wrong or are not to your taste then please talk to us. We are genuine people that work really hard and care about what we do. We are always happy to listen to comments that will help us to improve our business and product. We want you to have an experience that is what you wanted and expected. It is disappointing enough to know that we have not given the best of ourselves but to read it later on the internet when it could have been dealt with at the time is frustrating and upsetting.Whether in my establishment or any other talk to the staff treat them with respect and they will work that much harder for you.

Stopped in for a quick lunch while on our way to Reading on Tuesday 17th Jan 2012. We received a warm welcome in the lovely atmosphere of the pub. The food arrived in a timely fashion and was really good at a reasonable price. the service was friendly and courteous.

We will defintely stop by again next time we are passing.

Our party of 11, not easy diners descended upon the Highwayman on Christmas day. What a wonderful time we all had! The chef Paul had been amazing at catering to our parties needs and variated from the set Christmas menu to accomadate some fussy eaters amongst us. We talked to him prior to the big day and he was so kind and helpful that we wondered having never eaten there whether he was also a good cook... we need not have worried. The food was amazing, plentiful and delicious. The service impeccable and his wife was lovely too. Thank you both so much for a gorgous Christmas day, toasting by the wood burning fire with stunning views over snow covered hills. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and may well be back next year.Highly recommended.

4 adults and 3 kids (including a baby) made our way from London for Sunday lunch. We couldn't fault it- the service was fantastic (particularly the French waitress who indicated that the chef was more than happy to serve kids size portions of the lunch menu) and the food was delicious. Like everyone else has suggested, try the corned beef starter! And the gooey chocolate brownie with ice-cream -
delightful. We will be back-don't change anything!

The Highwayman pub in Checkendon undoubtedly serves the best food in the area. Run by an experienced husband and wife team (Paul the chef has worked in a number of top London hotels) they serve classic English dishes, beautifully prepared and presented. The service is friendly and welcoming and the prices very reasonable. We cannot recommend it too highly.

20 of us received a very warm Welcome from Paul and Evelyne after our lovely walk close to the pub.
We all enjoyed a very good 2 course lunch, the pub was warm and comfortable, and a nice relaxed coffee followed .
