Description: The Highwayman Inn is located in a beautiful hamlet near Checkendon, on the Berkshire, Oxfordshire border, only an hour from London and 20 minutes from Reading and Henley on Thames. The pub dates back to the 16th century and still retains some of its original characteristics. Our aim is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy our award winning food. We are committed to using local suppliers and produce with above all an eye for quality. If things go wrong or are not to your taste then please talk to us. We are genuine people that work really hard and care about what we do. We are always happy to listen to comments that will help us to improve our business and product. We want you to have an experience that is what you wanted and expected. It is disappointing enough to know that we have not given the best of ourselves but to read it later on the internet when it could have been dealt with at the time is frustrating and upsetting.Whether in my establishment or any other talk to the staff treat them with respect and they will work that much harder for you.

Been here quite a few times and each time we visit, we come away feeling pleased to have returned once again, a good atmosphere, reliable service and good honest food. Fish and chips with tartar sauce, mushy peas, scampli and chips with tartar sauce and a small salad, fresh cooked and enjoyable. We sat in front of a truly blazing log fire on a cold winters day, what could be better, oh and they do welcome dogs in the bar.

Well the last time I went here it was run by Marco Pierre White and a more horrible and joyless place you could not imagine. As a result it's taken us a long time to venture back.

But venture we did, and I'm very glad to have rediscovered it.

The pub is lovely, lots of little rooms and alcoves, roaring log fires round every corner, a proper country pub.

The staff were charming, even when we asked to move table it was no trouble and they came back later to check if all was well.

The food was excellent. Nothing too fancy, just traditional meals served perfectly. If you want a steak dinner with apple pie to follow and a decent glass of wine it comes to about 25 quid plus tip.

I will certainly be coming back. If only all the pubs in this area were as good.

At a recent lunch visit with friends, to the Highwayman, there were log burning stoves, with at least three tables adjacent to them. Also the propriatrix was friendly, so it was a warm welcome in both senses of the word.

They had a limited lunch menu, with about three choices for each of three courses. We all chose chicken liver pate, which was smooth and creamy, served with warm French bread and chutney. One could choose one or two courses from this menu. There was also a full a la carte menu as well.

The main course was gurnard, cooked so that it was nicely moist, with seasonal veggies and potatoes. they let us swap odinary potatoes for chips.

The third course was optional and I opted for a completely chocolate pudding. The capucinos were very frothy and the whole party suggested we should return again, before too long.

I recently organised for 40 people to come here, Paul the chef was most welcoming he added extra to his Sunday menu so we could have baguettes. The baguettes were really nice and a good variety. There was plenty of staff on so the queues to get served were kept to the minimum. It has nice small areas to have a quite meal or large seating areas for parties, lovely real fires and nice sofas for after dinner coffee lovely.
Earlier this week we also has lunch the food was marvellous, all cooked fresh. Staff all friendly
