We did a packaged tour through a car rental firm the first time we did the Golden Circle Tour. We rally enjoyed it but for our second trip to Iceland we put together our own tour and used our own rental car. The top three places to visit are Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss; all easy stops along one road. I added the small volcano Kerid on the way back to Reykjavik. Plenty of memorable photos and some healthy hikes. Plan to spend a day and make sure you pay to park at Thingvellir. There was construction there and in the confusion we failed to pay to park. The car rental agency charged us late for the parking AND a hefty fee. Kerid remains one of my favorite stops.

First tour that I took of Iceland, and a great introduction to the varied geological aspects of this island. Everything from geysers to waterfalls, with a continental plate thrown in for good measure. You really get a sense of the varied topography that makes up this island, and how the Icelandic people have adapted such, and themselves, to make use this in an eco-sustainable manner. Highly recommend this tour!

This is a beautiful route, with so many of natures beautiful wonders. You’ll see everything from geysers, to incredible waterfalls, to the national Park, to Icelandic horses. Plan to spend about an hour at the three main attractions to really explore, we’re comfortable walking shoes and clothing layers. Don’t be shy about walking over to check out River Ways, we saw salmon spawning in the national park. The route is gorgeous, with lots of scenery, and lots of chances to see Icelandic horses. We took a tour, so we could really enjoy the view without the hassle of driving.
