“Disappointed by the reality”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

Certainly a great location as it is set overlooking the beautiful village pond .

But then when we walk in and check in no one guides you to your reserved table because they did not actually;y reserve one for you and you are instructed to just sit where you wish.

However strangely they do insist you take with your initial round of drinks your bottle of wine for dinner and the four glasses for your table , very tricky 4 pre dinner drinks + bottle of wine + an extra 4 wine glasses.

Service is simply not on their agenda , yes polite , but then table service is very very slow and simply opportunistic as in based on when next the bar staff member appears , we were saddened by such a lovely place that historically was one of the best in the area and now seems to be in slow mode and is so chilled it is almost self service .

The menu was very limited so choice was non existent and the sirloin steak was too chewy the King Prawns were definitely not king size indeed very small and normal and all round this is a back to basics in every sense and a at best a pub only . We must admit the food was cooked good but very slow delivery indeed too slow but yes the beer was fine however we were seeking service , quality and enjoyment and the Strode Arms seems no longer geared to deliver those essential very modern century ingredients, So take care ,

“Wandering the hand-pumps!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

On our way to Porlock Weir we stopped over in our camper having seen the sign on the main road. What a great find! We not only popped in for a pint but ended up staying over in the corner of the car park and having an excellent dinner! Just as well really, because I had a most enjoyable wander along the excellent range of hand-pulled ales! Spot on! Next time in that direction we'll be popping back!

“Nice Food, Disappointing Service and Wait Time”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Just sent husband and friend to newly taken over local.
They came back frustrated - ordered steak, and had to wait ages, were just about to get up and ask where it was, and it arrived.
Supposedly group of ladies on next table had to chase their food too.
Then when waitress came to deliver coffee, she didn't bother to clear the finished plates away.
But food tasted good they said.
Come on Strode - smarten your act up!

“Relaxing lunch with friends”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We had lunch here yesterday with some friends, and we were not disappointed. The food and the service were excellent, and as it was such a beautiful day we sat outside, although I am pleased to say that my dog was allowed inside as well. We were made to feel very welcome, and not under any pressure to leave when we had finished, which was very nice since we were all having a good old catch up.

“Very lucky find!”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We very fortunately came across the Strode Arms after declaring a random pub search, and a subsequent a violent swerve off the main road at the sight of the brown sign! My boyfriend and I were heading back to Oxford in our VW camper after 10 days of Glastonbury mud, and looking and smelling the part too.

Nevertheless, we were warmly welcomed and we took a table in the garden to make the most of the sunny afternoon and to spare fellow diners of our close company. Starters = completely delicious, Mains (pork for me, lamb for him) = STUNNING, so much so that we went the whole hog and ordered pudding too. The cheese board was very generous and in the end I couldn't finish my chocolate ganache tart.

Really fantastic, a very lucky find for two hungry travellers who left with very happy full bellies. Thank you! Not the cheapest food but equally not at all unreasonable - you certainly get what you paid for.

So glad you found us on your way home from Glasto - quite a marathon haul being there for 10 days. Only sorry we couldn't offer you a shower! Hope to see you again next year and thanks for the lovely review. Guy, Suzy and Winkie
