Such a beauty of a pub. People may get drawn in by the pub next door. But this place is sooooo much better. It has a local “boozer” charm indoors with none of the pretentious faux good time atmosphere of chain pubs. The garden is lovely and on days like today perfect for kids and dogs with the river. Great menu honestly I can’t talk highly enough of this place

We chose to eat here on the busy Easter weekend as the pub along the road had a wait of over an hour on food orders and we were starving!

I think it’s fair to say this is the pub that is probably more frequented by locals and has plenty of drinkers rather than diners, but this was no issue as the restaurant part of the pub was effectively a separate half of this pub...and I have to say from the outside as well as internally this outlet has a warmth about it with its traditional build and decor.

Staff were friendly and the food was very acceptable. The batter in particular on my fish & chips was lovely & crispy. The beef & bacon burger was also nice and the prices were very reasonable.

Overall, this is a very good standby eatery if you like pub grub in relaxed surroundings.

We visited the pub on a trip down memory lane tour. The welcome was warm, the service was with a smile, food served quickly and was delicious and very well presented. We felt treated like valued customers and the meal was great value for money. Would definitely recommend it.

We ‘happened’ upon this pub more in desperation than pre-planning. The interior is nothing special – rather basic, in fact, although we ate in the bar and cannot therefore comment on the restaurant area – but the appearance belies the quality of the food, which was very reasonable indeed. Not haute cuisine but perfectly acceptable. Lynda behind the bar (surely the very doppelgänger of Amy Winehouse!) was immensely welcoming and went out of her way to ensure that we, two of whom are gluten intolerant, were looked after in every way. She even moved tables nearer to the fire to ensure that we were warm on what was a very dreary winter’s day. Lynda is a real credit to The Compasses. Given that this is not ‘smart eating’ by any means, we thought the meals were a tad expensive, but then this is Surrey and we are more used to Somerset where prices are generally lower. One could do worse than dine here if passing, although the adjacent Gomshall Mill might offer a more up-market experience, but probably at an even higher price.
