Stayed here for a night on the way back from Cape Town. Had a luxury room which was huge and very comfortable. A walk down to the Vaal River was lovely but there is a camping site there where the fishermen were playing radios rather loudly so not really very peaceful. But you cannot hear this from the hotel. Lovely pool, putt putt etc. The food as usual for a Protea was awful, the soft boiled eggs could have broken plate glass, but the hotel and service is great.

Our family of four stayed at the hotel both on our way to, and on return from a 40th birthday bash in Gauteng.

I packed my rod hoping to squeeze in a couple hours of art lure fishing for yellows in on both afternoons of my stay. Fishing was great! Caught no less than 4 yellows on day one in little over an hour - with a couple more getting away. On return the fishing was less brilliant landing only 2, nonetheless absolutely epic battles with a beautiful species!

The rooms are comfy, the food good and the staff friendly and helpful. As a whole on par - if you include the fishing, better - than any other Protea Hotel.

It is a bit of a pity that the pools, chess and put-put seem to have fallen into disrepair. (paint pealing, worn out carpets and missing chess piece etc.)

Either way, we had a great time and will return soon for more epic battles, good food and comfortable rooms.

Room Tip: Any of the family rooms on the ground floor.

We arrived at 7pm after traveling all afternoon. There was no porter to help with bags. Dinner was an absolute disgrace. Sloppy food, very limited buffet and grossly overpriced. The shower spayed all over the bathroom flooding the floor. Noisy. Beds very firm. Won't stay again.

I am a Protea Hotel regular, and as such am happy to report that the Protea Hotel Christiana measures up to my Protea Hotel expectations. I have stayed here more than once and will return in the future. Not only is it the only main-stream hotel group in town, but it it surprises in that there is nothing about the hotel that suggests that it has been left behind in terms of the styling, architecture, services and amenities. Protea must have spent a fortune to ensure that it measures up to its "big city" counterparts. It also offers more than you'd expect in the form of a natural mineral water spa (but check to see if its operational to avoid being disappointed). I found it be good value for money and the family suites are fit for,a family of 5 - comfortably.

Food is mainly buffet with an entertainment room for small kids next to the seperate bar and smoking area.

Some will be off limits for the disabled or frail as there are some stairs that are not matched with escalators or a lift: so again - check when you book.

The nearby game reserve, fishing in the Vaal and small town Christiana is not a destination in itself, but can keep the family entertained on a stopover.

As it is the best / only function venue in the area you may want to check if there are any major events planned during your stay (e.g. weddings and conferences) as this could be a bit disruptive.

All in all a venue I always look forward to staying over at.

As a stopover while driving between Cape Town and Johannesburg, this was lovely and great value for money. The rooms are clean and well equipped. The staff friendly and professional and they upgraded us, as they were not full, which was a great bonus.

The rooms were nice and had everything you needed, inlc hair dryer, tea coffee and free bottles of water. Rooms are VERY spacious with beds, desks and seating area, with African style design. The bathroom have both a large shower and separate large double bath. The hotel grounds are well kept and have lots of activities for those who staying longer (game drives, mini golf, fishing etc), while the hotel itself is very spacious, with dinning lounge, bar and entertainment room for kids. Meals were well priced, well cooked and tasty.

Was great value for money, catering for groups, conferences or passing travelers.

The first night of a two week trip started as a disaster at this hotel. Drunken louts at the entrance, very poor reception staff and very difficult to get a cold beer.
Our group of 38 was greeted at dinner with"we did not know you were here and the kitchen cant feed you". Now being about 120km from the nearest resturant, this possed a problem. Eventually they found some schnitzel and that is what we had. The breakfast with cold bacon was hardly any better although at this stage they knew we were there.
During our stay we saw not one person who resembled any form of management which is what is wrong with the place. The place is grubby and we wont return unless there is a major change.
Such a pity as it is a lovely setting.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the discomfort and inconvenience you experienced. Your feedback regarding the poor service is definitely not acceptable and by no means reflects the high standard of quality and service that Protea Hotel Christiana is usually proud to offer.

We have had a change of ownership in July 2012 and we are working frantically to improve all levels of service. I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised on your next visit to our hotel.

Your feedback is imperative for us to ensure that our GUESTS’ expectations are being met and exceeded. Without your comments, we would never know when we are doing right, but more importantly, when we are doing wrong!

Your interest and concern are much appreciated.

Again, please accept my sincere apologies.
