“Expected a bit more from a Westin”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

The hotel was OK. Nothing horrible, nothing great. The staff was friendly, the room was clean. I just expected a bit more from a Westin. The bed was very uncomfortable and very hard. I've slept in more comfortable beds in hotels of lesser caliber. I was here for a conference, the hotel restaurant was great, and there were several other spots to eat within walking distance.

The facilities are good, however the hotel is located in the middle of nowhere very far from Central Chicago (about 50 minutes by train).
Our room was very nice and clean and the Starbucks Coffee Maker was a plus!

They had a Dog Show the weekend that we stayed. There was hundreds of dogs!!!!!! And they were all booked in the hotel. We stayed on the 15th floor and were surrounded by barking, peeing and pooping dogs. The elevator had pee and poop in it.....pee and poop in lobby and hall way. Granted, the employees cleaned it up but it make for a smelly weekend. And forget about a peaceful nights sleep!! We should have been warned about the Dog Show when we made the reservation or at least put on a floor that was free of dogs. Not happy!!

Room Tip: Ask about groups/meetings/conventions going on in Hotel during the time period.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your most recent stay with us, we greatly appreciate any and all feedback in order to ensure that we are consistantly exceeding our guests expectations. I apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced during your stay here, being a pet friendly hotel we do host an annual dog show event the same time once a year. We understand that for many people, their pet is a part of the family and we like to view the dog show as one big familial event. We do however take the necessary precautions to ensure that the hotel is well prepared for such event and have a team of people who clean up after the pets throughout the day. I hope that you do choose to return to our property, as we would look forward to providing you a comfortable and relaxing stay!

We used Priceline and got the Westin. Very nice. The man who checked us in, Harry, was very pleasant and helpful. Our room was very nice, clean and modern. Fridge and coffeemaker were a nice touch. Very quiet. Nice pool and spa. We would stay again for sure!

Our check in was smooth and pretty quick with Harry helping us. (He also checked us out). The fitness trail was nice and we enjoyed that since we had awesome weather for it (not too hot, not too cold and a nice breeze).
The location was good for visiting the Gross Point Lighthouse, Six Flags and River Grove friends. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well and kept the room very comfortable.
There were a couple things on our floor that needed some attention. There was a terrible smell in our hall that smelled like spoiled milk all weekend. There was also a tray of food that was left on the floor across the hall from us for the entire day. It was there at 9am when we left our room and still there after 10pm. It seems that should have been picked up long before it was. The pricing of the room is a bit high when you consider everything else you are paying for. For example, do NOT touch the water that says FREE. It’s not FREE we were charged $4 for a bottle of water. It wasn’t even that great. Also, they charge 12.95 whether you use the internet in your room for 10 minutes or 24 hours. Ridiculous…. We had to pay $12.95 each day for 2 days when we used the internet in our room for about 10-15 minutes. This definitely needs to change for us to return.
The restaurant (service) was ridiculous. We went in for a late dinner Friday night. We were seated by a friendly hostess, and then promptly ignored for 15 minutes. The restaurant was very empty and there was one table next to us that our server walked past us three times to serve. She never even acknowledged us. We felt giving them 15 minutes to acknowledge us was more than enough. We got up and left and went across to Cooper's Hawk where we had a great meal and great service. We did not go back to the restaurant after that for the rest of our time there. There is also a pretty significant walk from the parking lot, so if you have any one in your party that struggles with walking, make sure you drop them off at the front door and then go park. We didn't mind the longer than average walk, but knowing that ahead of time for people who may have challenges would be good. We made reservations for 3 adults in our room and when we arrived we were asked if we wanted 1 King bed or 2 Queens? When we made the reservation, there were rooms with 2 Kings listed as available as well. Guess not? We would have preferred 2 Kings since we are tall and Queens typically aren't real comfortable for 2 people who are over 6 foot tall. Our son was with us, but we listed him as an adult, as he is fairly tall as well.

The shower water pressure was very low, but the fixtures were definitely a higher end fixture. It had a higher shower head and also had a hand shower you could use. That was a nice added bonus. Just wish the water pressure would have been a bit better. It was a bit difficult to get the shampoo out of my hair.

Overall, the hotel was nice in appearance and the hotel staff was friendly. Would have rated higher if the water pressure was decent and the smell wasn't so bad on our floor.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 2nd/3rd floor if you don't want a view of the roof. The view from the 5...

Awesome weekend getaway and the price was just right. Very clean and comfortable living arrangements. I informed the front desk it was our anniversary and he provided us with a corner room on the 14th floor. We stepped out of our room for dinner after check-in and when we returned, they had left us several bottles of spring water and a snack which consisted of nuts and chocolates, with a special note. It definitely added a very grateful touch during our stay. There was a chess tourney going on that weekend and we had the opportunity to talk with several of the participants. Great hotel with an excellent staff of professionals.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are large with great views on the upper floors

I stayed in a variety of hotels in the Chicago area from May-December of 2013. After sampling the following hotels,Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, The Tremont Chicago Hotel at Magnificent Mile, The Westin O'Hare, Sheraton Chicago O'Hare Airport Hotel, Sheraton Suites Chicago Elk Grove, The Westin Chicago Northwest, I chose the the The Westin Chicago North Shore as my home base and subsequently visited them again in December of 2013.
Wheeling is about a 40 minute drive from downtown Chicago. It is very accessible to the freeway, and has a lovely trail access behind the hotel. The hotel feels fairly new, and the lobby is large. There is a very large, 35,000 square foot meeting, wedding and banquet space. On one occasion there was an incredible poodle show taking place, and on another, there was a food fair where one could sample local restaurant quizine. By looking at the head count, both of these events were successful.
The rooms are clean and well maintained. The first stay at this hotel, I was given a large junior suite. The room was typical for a Westin. The best feature of this room was the large walk in shower. It did not have a bathtub, but I prefer a shower stall rather than a bath/shower combination. The second stay was on a club floor. The room was extremely tight, and in this room there was a shower/tub combination. Both rooms were well maintained. The hotel itself smelled and looked clean. There was a nice pool and exersize room on the bottom floor. The breakfast buffet is offered to platinum guests on the weekend. It was excellent, particularly on Sunday. I was unable to sample the club room offerings due to time elements. The only critisizm with this location is that I believe they could have done more to offer me a room upgrade due to my platinum status. When you frequent a hotel chain as much as I, it is this one thing that really makes you feel appreciated.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be the same. Ask for a junior suite with a large shower stall.
