I have been to Aore Island Resort twice before for a day but this last time in July, I was thrilled to be able to stay for 12 days. It is private and secluded and is a wonderful, happy, relaxing, calm, gentle and rejuvenating place.
I had a bungalow right on the edge of the water and the view, set perfectly between palm trees and huge shady Napangora trees, took you over the Segong Channel towards the main island of Santo. The bungalows, set amidst beautiful tropical gardens, are very comfortable and have everything you need. Sitting on the balcony gazing at a perfect tropical scene is complemented by the gentle lap of the water creating an instant and dreamy calm.
Delicious meals, simple or serious, are available all day from the Nakamal Restaurant and the ‘all you can eat’ complimentary buffet breakfast I looked forward to everyday.
There is a wonderful coral reef just out from the water’s edge and I had the most wonderful time snorkelling and taking photos of my beloved ‘Nemo” and other brilliantly coloured tropical fish...all this and you are only waist deep in water.
Once collected from the airport, it is onto the little ferry that the Resort provides to bring you over the 10 minutes from Luganville (the capital of Santo) to Aore Island. As you get off the ferry, you look down and there is a mass of coral and straight away, it is such a thrill to see masses of brilliantly coloured tropical fish and this, just from the landing.
When you can pull yourself away from looking at the fish, there is Anne, the owner of the Resort, waiting to greet you and show you to your bungalow. Anne is simply amazing! Anything you want or ask for, seems to appear as if by magic and her staff are very friendly and so helpful. Somehow you all become family and the gentle fun and camaraderie that you experience at the resort, is really enjoyable and makes your stay very special indeed.
Aore Island Resort is the perfect place to just chill out and do as little as you wish (but it's easy to walk down and have a great massage at the Day Spa) but if you begin to feel an urge to explore this beautiful island, there is so much you can do either at the Resort itself or on Santo. Organised or bespoke tours, in the expert hands of Tim from Santo Heritage Tours, include visiting the astonishingly beautiful blue holes, which really must be seen to be believed, and the equally as beautiful tropical beaches and bays where you can snorkel to your heart’s delight or else get really serious and dive one of the best dives in the world, the ‘USS President Coolidge”.
Staying at Aore Island Resort under the dedicated and considerate care of Anne and her staff, is an experience you will never regret and once discovered, will always return. I know I will.
To Anne, Annie and all the wonderful staff at Aore Resort, thank you so much for making my holiday so marvellous in every way.
