Description: In Italian, the word popolano means popular or of the people, which describes our award-winning, family owned restaurant to a T. On any given night, you'll see everyone from beach-going vacationers to businessmen to sweethearts to the local Little League team. A rehabbed circa- 1870's mansion in the heart of downtown Chesterton, Popolanos offers something for everyone at reasonable prices. Complete with large, sheltering trees, an outdoor dining patio, the restaurant reflects the intimate charm of an Italian Bistro. The eclectic menu features excellent made-to-order pizzas, creative pastas and a wide selection from sandwiches to steak.

We arrived 1/2 hour before closing and were concerned that we would need to rush, but the staff was very gracious and there were several other tables just starting as well. The kids reported very good grilled cheese and chicken strips. I had the pot roast sandwich with grilled onions - very tender and very good. It would be a great date night restaurant, but worked well for kids too. Crayons and paper were provided for the kids.

We went to this restaurant because we heard we could sit outside. That sounded like a good place to bring the kids. The atmosphere was relaxing and beautiful. We sat along the street and enjoyed people watching and just spending time as a family.

The prices on the menu caused us to balk a bit, so we decided just to split a pizza. Best decision ever. Their pizza is to die for. I'd say it's the second best pizza I've ever had in my life, after Palermo's on 95th in the Chicago area. Their pizza was so good that we got one to go the next night, too. Why is it no one can make pizza this good outside of the Chicago area? No idea, but this stuff was delicious.

Service was good. The toasted ravioli was a decent appetizer. The dessert special (chocolate chip covered fresh-fried donuts) was pretty spectacular. We really enjoyed ourselves, and I'd recommend it for families or for couples.

We stopped here before visiting the Dunes on a weekday. Although the weather was a little cool we had a very enjoyable lunch on the front patio. The food was fantastic. The pot roast sandwich was the best I ever had. The box lunch specials are the best value ever that include soup, sandwich, salad, dessert. Absolutely go here if you are in the neighborhood.

We did not go inside as is was a terrific evening to enjoy the outdoor patio area. I had the blackened tuna steak which was awesome! Our service was fine. We will definitely return next time we are in the area.
