“Nice refurbished building”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

This is an unmanned hotel - all contact is done by e mail.

It is not a walk to the Dunes but a drive.

It faces a very busy state highway and train tracks and the noise can be loud.

Yet it is a former home that is nicely refurbished with very spacious suites.

Ditto the positive reviews re: aesthetics and good karma for fixing up an historic home, but know that your room is not cleaned during your stay. One extra set of towels is provided, but trash is not emptied, floors are not swept (hello, beach sand!), and bedding is not changed.

There is no staff on-site, and our call to management went unreturned. Maybe you could request a mid-stay room cleaning during booking; we just didn't realize that was something we'd have to ask for.

No onsite staff also means a code pad to enter the building, and counting on other guests to lock the door upon entering. Twice we returned to find the front door unlocked.

Overall, beautiful property and comfy bed, but very pricey (over 150/night with the steep IN tax) for no breakfast and no cleaning once you check in.

Room Tip: Our room facing the back of the property (South Shore King) was quiet and had 4 big windows, nice sh...

First, any place that I can book on line, and then confirm by text - has my business for life. We booked the attic suite, with our 5 year old, and couldn't have been happier with our choice. You can read on their site all about it, and it is all true. If anything, the room is much larger than it is described to be on their site.

Others have complained that their is no one in the building. We loved being the only ones there on a week night.

I also loved the keyless enty system. No key to lose or fumble around with each day.

It is true that it is very close to a busy road. If you need silence when you sleep, you probably already have ear plugs, and you had better bring them. We didn't mind it at all.

We stayed in the Furness Suite and as soon as we walked in the room we loved it. Very impressed. We stayed for three nights. There were only two issues...there was only one mirror in the whole suite and that was in the bathroom and there was a little bit of highway noise, but we fixed that problem by buying a small fan to drown out the traffic noise and we slept like babies. We went to the Indiana Dunes and walked the beach. There is an awesome outlet mall in nearby Michigan City. And you're only an hour away from Chicago for a day trip. I would definitely stay there again. It was very relaxing.

We selected this hotel for a one night visit prior to driving into Chicago to board Amtrak. The location suited our needs to relax from a road trip. First and foremost, the owners have done a beautiful job at restoring this 1880s historic property. Booking this venue guarantees that projects, such as this, will be done in the future. The restoration is modern, "green"' and well suited for couples as well as groups. If we lived closer to this property we would probably organize a family reunion and book the entire hotel (it sleeps nineteen per the brochure).

The only improvement we would suggest is the addition of more sound proofing. Not only is Hwy 20 very close, the local train runs nearby as well. With most of the vistas seen from the hotel lovely and pastoral is a real shame the car/train noise is evident at all times. We are giving only three stars for "sleep quality" because of the street noise - the bedding and quality of mattress and the room ambiance was excellent.

Room Tip: The staff is off site which was not a problem for us. Make sure to keep contact info with you in ca...

My sister and I are both educators who were looking for getaway from the hustle of the classroom. Boy did we find it!!!! We absolutely love Dunes Walk Inn. Not only was it a secluded, well- decorated, and clean, it was also perfect for those who want to be close to nature. Luckily, we were able to bring our bikes and ride through the fall foliage and to the beach to embrace nature. Also, there were two home town resturants within minutes from the hotel to satisfy our taste buds. When we travel we like to avoid the tried and true and look for an adventure in relaxation and boy did we find it. I also can't speak enough for the hospitality of the Dunes Walk Inn owner. I accidentally left my running clothes in the closet following out getaway and the owners were nice enough to send it to me priority mail for FREE! Again, if you are looking for a well-desered break from the real world, treat yourself to Dunes Walk Inn. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Trying not to repeat other reviews: The road noise is bad. Very very busy highway. Yes, very clean, but to the point of sterile, even cold. The TV is so high on the wall that you have to tilt your head to watch. Also a little creepy without any staff on site. No welcome note, no nothing. Weird--blinds on some windows, not on others. The absolute weirdest--plastic bags on the pillows under the pillowcases!!!! Bathroom is wonderfully large, brand new. Nice to have TV and kitchen facilities. But definitely needs warming up with more personal touches. Not sure the noise issue could be addressed--perhaps noise proof storm windows?
