Owner description: As the name implies, the organization is a history museum which collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets objects and images which relate to past people and events of the local community. Founded in 1921, the Society has grown from a small exhibit assembled by the DAR and shown at the Allen County Courthouse to be the largest locally relevant historical museum in northeastern Indiana. The collection has expanded to over 27,000 objects and thousands of images. The History Center now occupies the Old City Building, circa 1893. In addition, the Society acquired the 1827 Chief Richardville house in 1991, and the Barr Street Market in 1991.

I had no idea Ft. Wayne could claim so many industrial innovations. including tellevision, Webcor recorders, music industry mixing, plus their railroading history. About 1 hour to 90 minutes.

Nice little history center. I really liked seeing the old jail in the Basement. Not very big, but it is the actual jail that was used into the 1970's. The building was the old City Hall, great building to see. This was my first visit to Fort Wayne. I was only in Fort Wayne for the weekend and this center gave me a good feel for Fort Wayne, it's industyr, it's history. I'm so glad I stopped in.

The jail in the basement is a must see. Liked the exhibits that showed items made in Indiana. I was curious about what was in the beautiful building. Glad I checked it out.

The history center is fascinating and well done. I just wish we had been given a pamphlet/short summary description to correspond with the exhibits as we wish to learn more. Perhaps the receptionist could have explained more Or offered any advice as to how to traverse the museum. It was a delight and well worth the $5 to see. Free parking is available next to the building in a lot.
Also, this history center is within walking distance of other delightful things to see in Ft. Wayne
(art museum, the park, art link, etc.).

This museum is in the old city hall, which moved in 1971. The building is made of stone and looks sort of like a castle, which is what got me there to begin with. Inside you learn of the history of Fort Wayne, from an actual Fort to a canal town, rail town, and then a city for manufacturing. The exhibits are good other highlights include the jail in the basement and the council chambers on the top floor.
